Product Description

Groundbreaking examination of scripture that reveals the real Jesus; a politically incorrect cage rattler who challenged the powerful and defended the defenseless. There is much emphasis in the church today by laity and clergy on being respectable, nice, and presentable. Yet where in scripture did Jesus say that we should make being well-dressed and well-behaved priorities? Is the church guilty of reducing Christianity to mere social etiquette? The Jesus of scripture rejected these priorities with word and deed. This book examines the original Gospel passages that are regularly avoided or sanitized by pastors, teachers, and writers exploring those times when Jesus said no and when he disturbed the peace. There are profound implications in understanding that the Jesus of the Bible is no passive pushover, but a vigorous truth-warrior who slays falsehoods with a sharp, double-edged sword. Intended for adults interested in knowing Jesus better and well-suited for personal reading or small group study. Jesus Unplugged is a provocative, accurate, biblical re-examination of Jesus.

Publisher's Description

Too much emphasis in the church today is on being respectable, nice, and presentable. Jesus was not. Relying on the original passages of scripture, Jesus is revealed as a provocative cage-rattler who started a revolution. A wonderful re-examination of Jesus.

Author/Artist Review

Tell us a little about yourself.  I'm remarried to a cute nurse practitioner. I have 2 kids in college and 1 still in high school. The cute nurse practitioner's kids are grown, and they've given her 3 grandsons so far. I'm the pastor of Marvin United Methodist. I like preaching and teaching. Researching and writing are fun too. I'm an amateur musician, archaeologist, and ornithologist.

What was your motivation behind this project?  I wrote Jesus Unplugged because I had to. The Jesus I found in Scripture, when as a young pastor I began to teach and preach, was almost totally unfamiliar to me. By that I mean, large chunks of the NT gospels must have been ignored not only by me but by those who taught me over the years at church. So my book deals with the passages from the original four NT gospels that are most often avoided or misrepresented by Bible preachers and teachers. The real Jesus of Scripture deserves to be heard. Do you remember the story of Jesus walking away from a waiting crowd without telling anyone where he was going? Do you remember that when the disciples found him and tried to bring him back to the waiting crowd that he refused to go? If not, you might want to check out Jesus Unplugged and Mark 1:32-38.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  What do I hope you get from Jesus Unplugged? The nice answer would be that I hope you get to know Jesus better. The "keep it real" answer would be that I hope you have a krisis! Krisis is the Greek word for judgment: Jesus said, "For judgment (krisis) I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind." John 9:39

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  The living theologians/authors who have influenced me most are Robert Capon, Ken Bailey, Baxter Kruger, Fred Craddock, Tom Long, and Charles Page. I'll save the dead folks who have influenced me for another time . . .

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  I'm currently researching for my next book from FaithWalk Publishing called Heaven for Skeptics. It should be out in 2007.
