I bought this for our newly adopted daughter (age 7). I may be enjoying it even more than she does! I've read the Bible through multiple times, I'm a pastor's wife, Sunday School teacher, and Bible Study writer. I say all that to say that I'm no novice to the Bible and it's stories, and yet I found this book enlightening and refreshing. Often I said to myself, "I've never thought of it that way before!" It is, indeed, a Bible STORY book, so I expected some elaborations and didn't find them to be offensive. My heart has been touched by how the stories all clearly point to our coming Rescuer. As far as the narrator goes: I LOVED him! I will confess that sometimes he fell flat while reading quotations, but overall I found it to be wonderfully executed. I plan to buy a copy of this for my 25 year old daughter to listen to on her way to work!
First off let me say that I love the fact that at the end of every story it points to Jesus, this is wonderful!
However...there are inaccuracies from the very beginning and a lot of unnecessary details added in that the Bible does not tell us or even hint at. I frequently thought "that doesn't sound right" and found myself looking up the passages in my bible to check the accuracy. The author definitely takes great liberties in rewriting these stories. This is definitely a "storybook" based on the Word of God but I would not say it's a Bible. There are other books that are more true to God's word and I want my daughter's mind filled with Truth.
Also, I am iffy on the narration, some of the tones the reader used don't seem quite right to me, a matter of opinion I know.
One more point, which again is a matter of opinion but rang true for both my daughter and I, but neither of us cared for the artwork. She thought it was "weird" and even thought some of the characters looked scary.
I'm glad that I didn't spend my own money on this but feel bad that someone else spent their good money on it as a gift for my daughter when there are other Bible storybooks out there that are truer to the Word of God.
Not only would I not recommend this to anyone else but we will not be reading/listening to this anymore. I will not be passing this on to anyone else or even donating to a second hand shop. As much as I hate to throw away a book that is very likely what will happen with our copy of The Jesus Storybook Bible and CD's.
Like I said, I do love that at the end of every story they do point to the coming of Jesus and I want to like this book it just doesn't sit well in my spirit with the inaccuracies I see throughout.
My grandchildren aged 6 and 9 loved the book. It was especially exciting for the 6 year old because she could read along with the book as she was listening to the cd. They both liked it and that was my purpose for the purchase. They could learn about the bible through storytelling and the added feature is the cd that's included.
