Editorial Reviews

Jesus by Nancy I. Sanders is part of the Get to Know series of biographies for young readers. It beautifully provides an historical account of not only Jesus’ earthly life, but also God’s plan from the beginning (Adam and Eve) to the end of times (Revelation), weaving archaeological evidence with the story of the Bible. The theology is sound, although the first chapter is somewhat difficult to follow as the author attempts to simplify thousands of years of history and the story of sin and evil. Readers who are not familiar with the Old Testament or the full story of Jesus may find this section confusing. A strong feature is the use of graphics throughout the book, including maps, photographs, and reproductions of religious masterpieces. Stylized sidebars–e.g., “Scripture,” “Bible Hero,” “Eyewitness Account,” “Did You Know?,” and “Word Bank”–positioned in each chapter provide additional information. Their design is reminiscent of a web page, making the book more user-friendly for today’s young reader. The “Word Bank” feature highlights not only religious terms (e.g., Messiah, repent), but also words used in our everyday language (e.g., insisted, obedient). The writing is fourth- to fifth-grade level based on a Flesch scale, but with 12 well-defined chapters the book also makes an excellent read-aloud for younger children and provides good material for vocabulary building or a first book report assignment. The inclusion of a timeline, glossary, and bibliography makes it a good reference book for a child’s home library. Readers of Imagination Station, the popular Adventures in Odyssey series by Focus on the Family, may be enticed to read this Get to Know series (Sanders co-authored several of the later Imagination Station books). Common Core Standards are noted on the back, which may be helpful for schools and libraries that are participating in this program. Martha Jo Dendinger, CLJ

Get to Know Jesus is part of the A Biography For Kids series by Nancy I. Sanders. The book is a little over 100 pages long and an excellent resource for children ages five to ten years old that are aiming to learn more about people from the Bible. I plan on using this book and the others in the series as part of our Bible studies during our home schooling but imagine it would be excellent to read as is as well as to be used in a church classroom setting.

There are 12 chapters in this biography. The chapters cover the important plan, the birth of Jesus, miracles, and more. There are 4-color maps and numerous photos excellent for visual learners. In the front of the book, there's a key that informs readers and teachers to get to know how to use this book. There are icons such as a oil lamp to direct you to read a scripture from the Bible, a clay jar icon that features fun facts, a word bank that introduces biblical words and definition perhaps not known to a child before, and more. A personal favorite of mine is the time line near the back of the book which can tie well into other history studies. The visual appeal is quite high and the book is written in a way children can understand easily.

Overall, this is an excellent biography and would be a great book to use for book reports, casual reading, or character studies. Children can see literally thanks to the maps and color photos wear Jesus walked, they'll learn about His family tree, briefly be introduced to the feasts commonly celebrated by the Jews, and other important information.

I'm excited to go through the Life of Jesus with my daughter this upcoming school year. She's 6 and has looked through the book a bit on her own and she's pretty excited too.

A few weeks ago I had an opportunity to review the Apostle Paul-part of the Get to Know series. As soon as I had finished and posted that review, I requested Jesus-part of the Get to Know series. It is wonderful! I love this series of biographies for children! I love the maps, photos, and artwork. I love the included background information. I love the definitions. I love the sections on Bible Trivia, eyewitness accounts, and information on Bible heroes. There is even a color timeline in the back of the book (there is a small error in this timeline: a BC where there should be an AD on the approximate date of Jesus' baptism.) This little biography is packed full of information on the life and times of Jesus. I love this series and look forward to reading more in the future!

Get to Know Jesus is a biography for kisd by Nancy I. Sanders. What a great book! The book makes it easy for children to understand who Jesus is. I love the vibrant and beautiful pictures.

In addition to the colorful pictures, there are sections of the following:

Did You Know? - Which tells of small tidbits of information or facts

Eyewitness Account - Which is of historians of the time of eyewitness accounts that tell of Jesus

Word Bank - This is on most pages that tell the meaning of certain words. These words are also included in the Glossary of the book

Bible Hero - Tells of certain heroes from the Bible scriptures

Timeline of Jesus - Shows an approximate dates of Jesus's life and what was going on around the world at the same time

I think this book is great for kids and adults, as well. I enjoyed reading it. I was quite impressed with it. I look forward to other books in the Get to Know series.

I definitely recommend it to children so they can learn about Jesus.

    My Review:

All these years I have bought biographies for my children to write reports from and to learn more on a specific individual but I recently come across and author that writes biographies based on Biblical figures. Now we can have these type of books around for our children to write papers on. The people discussed in the Bible really did exist so why not right a report on David or Daniel? Well now they can! Nancy Sanders has written a series called the "Get to Know" series and each book contains a multitude of information on each Bible figure. And there is plenty of information there to create all sorts of resources for projects and reports.

In Jesus (Get To Know), you will find many facts about our Saviour as well as maps and timelines that explain his life and ministry. Full of interesting facts, Bible knowledge and very intriguing photographs these biographies will be all you need to learn about Jesus and so much more. Geared toward the 6-10 age group and a very short read.

**Disclosure** This book was sent to me free of charge for my honest review from Book Look.
