Editorial Reviews

For many of us, young and old, the anticipation of Christmas Day is one of the most enjoyable parts of the festive season. "A Jesus Christmas" reminds us that the anticipation of that first Christmas was far greater. From the moment sin entered the world, we were faced with a problem that only God could fix. This book reminds children, and parents, of how the Old Testament narrative could only ever be fulfilled in the arrival of the Messiah. "A Jesus Christmas" is a beautiful way for whole families to gather together around God’s Word and discover why Christmas is ultimately a reminder of God’s great and loving plans for humanity. -- Chris Cipollone (Author of Down, Not Out)

With every Christmas becoming more commercialized, parents are earnestly seeking new ways to make the true story of Christmas much more clear to their children. One glance through this remarkable book tells me that "A Jesus Christmas" is just what mothers and fathers are looking for. What a great family project this is, providing guide points for discussion, age-appropriate activities, and "homework" for every child. I highly recommend this book as a practical and powerful way to keep Jesus Christ and his Word at the very center of your family’s Christmas.
Barbara Reaoch has written a fine series of family devotions for the Christmas season. These daily studies are interactive, instructive, and faithful to Scripture. If you have young children in your home, and you want to make this Christmas more of a “Jesus Christmas” than last year, try this little book by this experienced children’s teacher.
Barb Reaoch has provided families with a unique interactive Christmas devotional starting with God’s promise in the Garden and continuing in a logical progression to the incarnation. Coming from a strong inductive Bible-study background, she has intentionally encouraged the development of good Bible-study skills for the whole family. Interspersed among the teaching in "A Jesus Christmas," children read directly from biblical texts and answer text-related questions. In addition to informing the mind, Barb has provided an opportunity for engaging in application of the truths learned and for families to make Christ the center of their holiday celebration.
Barbara Reaoch's book on Christmas stands out because it helps us see that Old Testament promises are fulfilled in the Christmas story. Christ's birth isn't an isolated event but fits with the fabric of all of biblical revelation. I also love the questions which provoke readers to dig out answers from the Scriptures for themselves. I predict A Jesus Christmas will be read by many because it is biblically faithful and accessible to all.
As a pastor and a father of young children, I'm always on the lookout for good devotional materials for children. A Jesus Christmas by Barbara Reaoch is an answer to that pursuit. She does a wonderful job helping us to center our gaze on Jesus during a season of the year when it's so easy to focus on ourselves. I recommend families everywhere to get it, study it with your kids, and remind one another of the reason for the season.
With its focus on the good news of Christ, A Jesus Christmas is the perfect gift about the Perfect Gift. This easy-to-use, 25-day advent devotional will engage children and families with interactive questions and space for creative journaling. Barbara Reaoch wisely guides even young readers through the story of redemption, always stopping at signposts along the way that point the heart to Jesus.
It is a special joy to commend Barbara Reaoch’s wonderful devotional book. It’s the world’s best story of all time—the story of Jesus’ love for all of us, including the youngest person on the planet. Barbara presents the key truths of the gospel. She doesn’t get technical or above the vocabulary of keen young audiences. She has worked with children around the world for many wonderful years. May the blessing of God accompany this timely work to the honor and glory of his name.
"A Jesus Christmas" is a wonderful book for parents who want to help children see the big picture of the gospel. Full of rich and interactive devotionals, it will open the door into family conversations that celebrate the glory of Christ during Christmastime—and beyond.

Author/Artist Review

Tell us a little about yourself.  Barbara Reaoch says, "Nothing thrills me more than to see the great truths of the gospel change kids lives. I love to give adults tools to disciple the next generation. I want every parent and teacher to know that God's Word has power to enable their children to discover the joy of loving God."
Teaching cross-culturally changed Barbara's perspective. She says, "Living overseas I learned in a new way that God's Word can reach children in every situation. No matter what reasons people think they cannot disciple their children - they can! I've seen the power of God's Word help children around the world from Africa to Asia, India to the Alps, poor or rich. Whatever the challenge - God has given parents the privilege and power to reach their children with the transforming truth of his Word." Barbara and her husband lived in Michigan before moving to Cape Town, South Africa, to teach Bible Study Fellowship classes. They also worked with the Rafiki Foundation to train young women in job and life skills. With her grandchildren far away, Barbara began to write Bible studies for them to bridge the distance. She drew her first two books, "Why Easter" and "Why Christmas" from those studies. Barbara's most recent book is "A Jesus Christmas." After returning to the US, Barbara directed the Children's Division of Bible Study Fellowship International. Barbara now lives in Minneapolis, MN, where she is learning to love snow again! She and her family are privileged to be a part of the wonderful body of believers at Bethlehem Baptist Church.

What was your motivation behind this project?   I wanted to give parents a tool to trace God's promise to send Jesus right from the beginning of the Bible. I also wanted to spotlight the continuing struggle with the lie of the serpent and the truth of Jesus. A Jesus Christmas will help parents and kids alike learn what they believe, why they believe it and how to apply and talk about what they believe!

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  I wasn't sure how journaling would work for kids. Seeing families take and use it with different ages and abilities opened my eyes! Even children too young to write found journaling meaningful by drawing pictures. God's truths sake deeper into their minds and hearts.
