I love Sarah Young's books , I have reviewed a few others of her and I find them refreshing. Jesus Calling for teens 50 devotions to Grown in your Faith has a total of 125 pages full colored art work through out this little jem of a book. My 13 year old daughter has a heart for God but has often told me she wish her Faith was more. When I saw this I had to review it so for Easter she would get this great book she can read when she has down time. I LOVE how short each entry is, most kids/ tweens/teens can't keep their focus very long and if they have ADD or ADHD you can forget about them reading a full chapter without getting antsy . Each Devotion is one page and a beautiful scripture is one page with very nice art work on the background. Would I recommend this book for Teens? YES, matter of fact kids age 10 - up this book would be great for!

True to her writing style, Young writes the devotions as if Jesus is speaking to the reader. Young states in the introduction:

"The Bible is the only perfect Word of Godwithout errors. I work hard to keep my devotional writings consistent with the unchanging truths of God's Word.

I have written from the perspective of Jesus speaking, to help readers feel more personally connected with HimI've included Scripture references after each reading. Words from the Scriptures (some paraphrased, some quoted) are indicated in italics." -Sarah Young. "Jesus Calling for Teens:Grow in Your Faith"

There are fifty short devotions. Each devotion is followed by one or more scripture references, but the scripture is not printed out for the reader.

However, on the page beside each devotion is a full color page with a scripture verse printed out. This scripture is different than the ones referenced at the bottom of the devotion page, but it correlates to the devotion. The scriptures used in the book are from the NIV, CEV, ICB, NKJV and the NLT of The Holy Bible.

The devotions are pulled from Young's original Jesus Calling book. A few devotions have words inserted here and there to pertain to teens. For example, one devotion mentions getting a driver's license and taking tests.

The book is advertised for teens age thirteen through eighteen. Because of the simplicity of the content, I think the majority of the book is best suited for ages 11through 13.

The content also makes several references to things readers experience in church. That makes the book lean toward a Christian audience or at least an audience that attends church.W hile the content applies to everyone, the colors and illustrations have a feminine touch.

Jesus Calling for Teens is an encouraging, uplifting book. It's focuses on making time to connect with Jesus. I like that Young continually reminds readers of Jesus' love for them and how he wants them to trust Him.

However, I am not sure Young's devotions are meaty enough for teens to "grow in [their] faith" unless the devotions inspire teens to actually dig into God's Holy Word themselves. Of course, the pages that show scripture quotes from the Holy Bible contain God's living word. That always has the power to transform lives!

Personally, I would have liked this book more had it contained more actual scripture instead of Young's rewording of it. But then, that is her signature writing style. I think teens will need a good bit more spiritual meat to chew on than what's offered here if they want to grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ. Overall though, the book is uplifting and encouraging.

    Well written and meaningful

This is one of many books in the Jesus Calling series, and while I haven't yet had the honor of diving into the rest of them, this read made me realize that I'll need to change that.

At fifty devotions, this books carries a wonderful length. Each devotion is relatively short (one or two paragraphs normally) and concentrates right where it wants to go. There's a heading before each one, which informs the reader what the topic will be. The devotions nestle in very closely with a Bible verse, which one is mentioned at the end of the reflection. On the page opposite to the devotion are gentle screening of leaves in various pastel shades behind a quoted Bible verse which relates to the one in the devotion.

The author makes a note at the beginning of the book in which she explains how each devotion is set upJesus speaking to the reader where 'I' is Jesus and 'you' is the reader. She explains that the verses being reflected on are either rephrased or taken directly. While this sounds a little odd at first, it becomes clear from even the very first devotion, that the author has found a way to create a strong way to connect the reader to each verse. The thoughts reflect exactly those which many readers of the intended age group have, the problems they face, and the concerns which trouble them. It's personal without being preachy and offers, above all, a sense of hope, comfort, and not being alone.

JESUS CALLING: 50 DEVOTIONS TO GROW YOUR FAITH is a devotional especially for teens. They are short, to the point, and easily read in a spare moment or two. Written in first person, it reads as if Jesus is talking to the reader.

As devotionals they are good, but these are not meant to be used to grow spiritually as there is little to no meat involved. This is like a quick power snack. You could take it as deep as you like though if you look up the verses and do word studies.

A great devotional for teens that I recommend. I love the pictures and highlighted verses feature and feeling that Jesus is actually talking to me.

I was given a copy free. All opinions are my own.
