Product Description

Now regarded as a seminal work in the study of the historical Jesus, N. T. Wright's Jesus and the Victory of God focuses directly on the historical Jesus: Who was he? What did he do? What did he say? And what did he mean by it?

Wright begins by showing how the questions posed by Albert Schweitzer a century ago remain central today. Then he draws on the gospels to sketch a profile of Jesus as a prophet and a subversive story teller all the while illuminating the symbols which ordered his world and the answers he gave to the key questions posed to him by his context and the people he encountered.

The examination of Jesus' aims and beliefs, argued on the basis of Jesus' actions and their accompanying riddles, is sure to stimulate heated response. Wright offers a provocative portrait of Jesus as Israel's Messiah who would share and bear the fate of the nation and would embody the long-promised return of Israel's God to Zion.

Indispensable for every scholarly library, this second volume in Wright's Christian Origins and the Question of God series is regarded as one of the finest studies ever conducted on the question of the historical Jesus.

Endorsements

N.T. Wright is one of the most formidable of traditionalist Bible scholars.
-Richard N. Ostling

Tom Wright's bold and brilliant book challenges us to rethink everything we thought we knew about the Jesus of history. Wright masterfully surveys the field of research on Jesus as a first-century Jewish apocalyptic prophet...The result? A portrait of Jesus that situates him firmly 'on the ground' in the politics of first-century Judaism while integrating the data of the Gospel traditions in original and surprising ways. Wright's sweeping hypothesis, presented in delightfully lucid prose, sets a benchmark for all subsequent investigations of the historical Jesus.
-Richard B. Hays

With this brilliant and thoroughly argued book, N.T. Wright has established himself as the leading British Jesus scholar of his generation.
-Marcus Borg

A great study that tries to place Jesus within his time and culture while seeing the gospel records as essentially accurate. You can't help but dialog with Wright even if you disagree with him. For a look at the Gospel of John from the same perspective see "The Restoration of Israel in John's Gospel" by John Dennis.

This book is a must for any serious student of the New Testament. It is wonderfully written and challenges some of the prominent views of Jesus. Wright's own conclusions place Jesus' life, ministry, and self-understanding within the first-century context. It is a hallmark of scholarly study of Jesus, sure to impact the study of Jesus for years to come.
