Publisher's Description

D. A. Carson addresses laypeople and pastors with a concise explanation of the science of textual criticism and refutes the proposition that the King James Version is superior to contemporary translations. The book provides a readable introduction to two things: biblical textual criticism and some of the principles upon which translations are made.

Author Bio

D. A. Carson (PhD, University of Cambridge) is research professor of New Testament at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Illinois. He is the author or editor of more than forty books and is one of the leaders of The Gospel Coalition.

I agree with the first two reviews on a couple of points, but have nothing against the KJV translation as I use it from time to time. May I add that I came into contact with a "King James Only" couple of several years ago. Their stanch stand for the KJV surprised me, as they essentially condemned me and the translation I was using as heretical, which prompted me to do some of my own research. The couple was totally ignorant of the history of the English Bible but also of textual criticism. This book is a great companion to the book " The King James Only Controversy" by James R. White. Although I must admit Mr. White's book is easier to understand. I now have several books on textual criticism as well as the NT master texts of the TR and of Westcott and Hort. I also have 30+ translations from Wycliffe's Bible of 1382 to several modern translations. It is sad that so-called Christians can be so narrow-minded and condemnful as they are going against the very scriptures which they are suppose to be following.

I have been studying this issue for quite sometime, and i have recently acquired my own copy and read through it. This book is an amazing precursor to the book "The King James Only Controversy" by James R. White. I will highly recommend this to my friends and family. This is a MUST have for every Christian's library! :-)

This book is very hard to understand unless you have a phd in english. It is not written to be easily understood. It was kinda disappointing. The parts that I did understand were good though, just far and few between. Unfortunately this is the only book written that explains the differences in the available greek texts.
