5 Stars Out Of 5
A truly remarkable commentary
January 7, 2016
I was not prepared to be as moved and spiritually enriched when I first started reading this commentary, but it did not take me long to find out. You are hard pressed to find any modern day commentary authors on the Book of James to use Thomas Manton as reference, and that is truly unfortunate. Every page (even though James is only 5 chapters, Manton devotes 365 pages!) is filled with insight and well researched (he is well versed in the Church Fathers). And he takes each verse seriously, and throughout his exposition explains his reasoning, (which even modern day commentators are lacking at times, but this guy in the 1600's had it down to an art, with even explaining his views and understanding in the notes after commenting on a verse), which is very clear and convincing. And he always bring every passage to a pastoral application, which brings the reader to really think and apply what Manton brings out of the text.
I usually read a book and move on to the next, shelving the book in my bookcase for future references. But with this book I very much plan to read it again, as this author more than any other has enriched my walk with God beyond any other author ever has, and even that includes the theological giants, Calvin and Luther. As the Book of James is my main focus of hopefully a lifelong study, Thomas Manton will be the standard for all works that I plan to study and read.
