When family reunion day arrives, Jackson, a lonely ten-and-a-half-year-old boy, is loathe to share his room with Great Aunt Harriet. She's a hundred and twelve years old, talks unintelligibly out of her toothless mouth, and has very, very, very big hair. But when he falls into her piles of hair during the night, Jackson encounters a world he'd never dreamed existed. In this magical fantasy complemented by zany illustrations, Jackson meets a host of extraordinary characters and finds that his life, far from being average and uneventful, is being written by the great Author, in whom all stories find their meaning.
This juvenile novel flows easily and has characters that are easy for kids to relate to. Kelly sometimes uses words younger readers may not understand, but she always follows the words with humorous definitions so that kids will not become confused. The plot has numerous unpredictable twists and Kelly's sense of humor adds to this sense of unpredictability.
Kids reading this story will learn the truth of Psalm 139:14"I am fearfully and wonderfully made." They will also learn that God has a story He has written just for them in which they are the heroes and heroines. Jackson Jones is appropriate for children in upper elementary school and junior high, but if parents choose to read it to their children, they, too, will find themselves enjoying it. It's like reading his mind—like all the stories/adventures he makes up—like his dreams and daydreams—but put together in a more polished way.
This book, Jackson Jones: The Tale of a Boy, and Elf, and a Very Stinky Fish was superb—it's just right for the age group for which it was written. It's imaginative, quirky, silly, and has a wonderful amount of rabbit trails. It's the story of a boy's overnight journey into a magical world in his great-aunt's hair! Weird, huh? ïŠ It's an amazing journey for a normal, kind of insecure young boy—as he travels along with the help of a guide (Meeka the elf)—into many different mini-adventures and meets many more folks living in "Great-Aunt Harriet's Hair." In his travels he meets several very wise residents of this place (Great-Aunt Harriet's Hair!) who teach him lessons about his value as a person and his outlook on life as well as teaching him about "The Author" who created him/life/etc and has a plan for his life.
I don't want to give any more of the story away, you need to read this book if you have kids in this age range! It's a fun fun read, and it has a nice gentle message about life and God's control/purpose/plan for it. It's not an evangelistic book by any means, but it's a great nudge in relation to God's hand in each of our lives. This will be a great addition to my son's library—of course it's not the only type of reading material he loves reading, but it's certainly a winner!
I would totally recommend this book! I will say that some readers might find it totally ridiculous, not their type of reading, but for my son and his friends—this is it!
