This is a very short commentary on the book of Isaiah that's 144 pages. I was personally shocked when it came in the mail because of how thin it was. With the book of Isaiah being 66 chapters long, I expected this to be at least around 250 pages of jam packed info on the book. Isaiah is full of prophecy, so why not a large commentary? This book contains 21 chapter that breaks the book of Isaiah into a smaller understanding for the every day person.

It dives into a summary of the book of Isaiah and each individual chapter. I enjoyed the smaller breakdowns because they helped me understand the basics of Isaiah as a whole. Isaiah can be a tough book to study because it's heavy with prophecy. It focuses on the prophecies while still being easy to understand.

I love that it divides Isaiah into two parts with mini section. It highlights the key information. This is great for on the go Bible study and personal use. It may not be ideal for a group study, but for those looking for a quick understanding this does well.

Do I recommend it? Yes, if you're looking for something quick and simple. No, if you're looking for something more in-depth.

Everyday Bible Commentary: Isaiah, written by Alfred Martin, published by Moody Publishers, is a book that carries its readers through a study of the book of Isaiah.

This publication is part of a series of Bible study books entitled the Everyday Bible Commentary. It was originally published in 1956, but its content still has relevance in today's struggling society.

Martin is certainly attached to his opinion on the book of Isaiah, as seen in the manner in which he utilizes to speak about those who hold to a differing opinion on such ideologies as the time period in which the book was written and his belief that all the prophecies have or will eventually take place.

This commentary carries its reader through a general synopsis of Isaiah, through his commissions, his teachings about the coming Messiah, God's comfort, and the burdens that were going to be placed on the nation Israel.

Instead of being a complete, comprehensive commentary, this book carries its readers through highlights in the book of Isaiah, focusing on very select portions of the text. So if you are looking for an in-depth commentary, this might not be the book you would purchase. But if you are seeking an in-depth theological study of specific ideologies found in Isaiah, then you have found your resource.

I love how the book begins with a great synopsis of the Isaiah itself. It starts at "10000 feet" and explains much of the context that Isaiah was written within. This foundation is wonderful for any bible student who, justifiably so, is nervous or intimidated by the monumental writings found within. The book of Isaiah is not for the casual reader (to reach the depths contained within), but this introduction helps to break the surface before undertaking a deeper dive. It requires that you have the book of Isaiah in front of you. If you read the commentary alone without reading the corresponding text in Isaiah, it would be much like a tour guide of a famous destination describing the sites to someone who isn't there to see them. There may be a loose understanding, but so much is lost without having the experience itself. I'll say it again, by not reading along in scripture with this book serving as a guide you will lose so much (and will likely be a bit confused). Be prepared to NOT just blow through this commentary in 1 sitting (unless your sittings are 6-8 hours)... time will be required to get the full value from it! Each topic is covered just as a stop in a tour would cover as you read along in scripture. Insights and context are offered as to why each individual place discussed in the text is significant. Mr. Martin weaves together the major threads of the book eloquently.

If you are at all interested in extracting a deeper truth from the book of Isaiah, I would not hesitate for a moment to recommend this book to get you started on your journey. I want to wrap this review up with a quote found near the end of the book from Mr. Martin himself: "One cannot stress too much the necessity of reading and meditating upon the book of Isaiah itself. This is especially true because the Word of God is not like any merely human book. There is a spiritual as well as an intellectual element in the apprehension to it." In my reading of this book, the Holy Spirit met me half way and revealed the spiritual nature of the book of Isaiah in a new way. My hope is that with the help of Mr. Martin, you find a greater intellectual understanding of Isaiah.

I really like the idea of having individual books of the Bible in a small, portable commentary. These are excellent if you want to be able to take them with you in your Bible bag and not have to lug around a bulky commentary.

I have read about a third of this commentary so far and I find it very helpful. The margins are wide enough that I can add notes from other commentaries or from my Study Bibles and the paper is regular book type paper so you can highlight and write in this book with no problems.

These are very well made little books and I will continue to add different books to my commentary collection. I would definitely recommend this to people who are new to the Bible and want to dig a little deeper into different books. The book of Isaiah can be a bit overwhelming since it is such a large book but having something like this that helps to unpack it and break it down is great to have.

I received this copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own. If you would like to see a video review of this book please see my you tube channel under the name of Bible Believing Christian.
