Product Description

Newton's ideas didn't come to him like an apple falling from a tree. Rather, it was a process where he thought about problems continually. Brilliantly showing children the results from the rigors of scientific thinking, as well as the importance of peer-review, publishing, and the give-and-take exchange of ideas so important to science today, this biography of Newton deftly combines the story of Newton's life, the historical setting he was working in, and the development of science. Inventor of what we know as the three laws of motion, calculus, gravity, modern physics, as well as rules for scientific reasoning and the scientific method, modern science still rests upon his shoulders. 126 pages, indexed.

Parental Note: This biography notes the historical speculation about a possible homosexual affair between Newton and another mathematician as well as his firm (though unorthodox) belief in God. Two metaphors mention Harry Potter.

Publisher's Description

Here is a man with an imagination so large that just ?by thinking on it,? he invented calculus and figured out the scientific explanation of gravity. Kathleen Krull presents a portrait of Isaac Newton that will challenge your beliefs about a genius whose amazing discoveries changed the world.

Editorial Reviews

"The second title in Krull’s Giants of Science series meets, and perhaps even exceeds, expectations set by the debut, Leonardo da Vinci (BCCB 7/05). Krull and Newton are a match made in heaven: she with her flair for capturing the flaws and foibles of the mighty, and he with his razor-sharp mind and abysmal social skills."—Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books, starred review

"Outstanding. A multi-faceted portrait of a genius."—School Library Journal, starred review

I pre-read Kathleen Krulls books before I let my children read them; I am so very glad I did! The truth is sometimes distorted and even un-factual (assumed) in parts of these book series. The books cover a small portion of the lives of people who have a lot of story to tell. The choice the author has made in which part of these extraordinary peoples lives too share is a bit disturbing. Its as if the author has chosen to leave out all the great parts of their lives for the negative gossip, shady, and juicy parts of their lives. Telling only a part of a story is fine and even necessary in this case, but how it is told can change the entire meaning and therefore distort the truth. Although she writes in an easy to read and attention grabbing style, she presents the facts in a way that is beneficial and geared toward her worldview. These books will cause doubt and confusion in a childs Christian heritage and Christian worldviews. CBD, why are you selling her books? As a Christian book distribution company it is books like this that force me to question you companies credibility. Please consider removing them for your selections. There are a lot of great books out there on the lives of people who impacted our world, these book are not them.

I was disappointed in this book. It is a classic modern example of reading homosexual theory into people's lives in the past. Having an entire chapter in a children's book dedicated to exploring the theory of him having a homosexual relationship is an excellent way of hijacking what he did in the scientific realm.

The important thing for kids to come away with when reading about historical figures is WHAT they did to deserve a place in history not focusing on sensational speculation of his sexual behavior.

Our family LOVED reading the Isaac Newton book from the Sower Series also available here on CBD. It is excellent!

I cannot recommend this book (and whole series) enough. I picked this book up for my son who was in 5th or 6th grade at the time. I just thought it might help him to understand the world that Newton lived and worked in. I grabbed it from his nightstand late one night and read half the book before I forced myself to put it down and go to sleep. The next morning I took it to the gym and finished it on the bike. I was laughing out loud so much that it drew attention from the other regulars there. They gave me quite a look when they saw it was a biography of Isaac Newton.

Kathleen Krull is quite a writer. She brings you into the world of great scientists and helps you to see how it shaped who they became.

Oh, by the way... my son liked it too :)
