Publisher's Description

We all want a place where our stories matter, our voices are heard, our uniqueness is celebrated, our failures are embraced, and our hopes are unleashed. That kind of deep, life-changing community was modeled perfectly by Jesus and the ragged bunch of disciples with whom he chose to spend his time. But how can we create it in our lives?

Using the relationship of Jesus to his disciples in the upper room, Bill Donahue presents a simple but compelling approach to community life that was modeled by Jesus and offered to us all today. Using a table, a towel, and the truth, Jesus created an "irresistible community" where everyone finds a place to belong, live fully in the truth, and serve others with joy. Foreword by Dr. Henry Cloud.

"The Irresistible Community- An Invitation to Life Together" uses several vivid images to convey its message, beginning with the image of people coming together at a table. We gather at a table for many reasons. We may be debating something, in deep disagreement with each other but ultimately committed to finding a unifying solution. We may be celebrating and laughing, delighted with each other's company and partaking of some good victuals. We may be mourning, dealing with life's hard times, leaning heavily on the trusted friends who are present with us.

If we view a community as a group of people who come together at a table, then obviously it must be one multi-purpose table! As Bill examines the "Kitchen Table," the "Conference Table," the "Operating Table," and a few other tables, we learn ways we can serve those who have come to that particular table at this particular time.

Which leads us to the second image, the towel image. Jesus used that lowly-yet-essential household item to clean his disciples feet, and in that act of humble love and care, he marked them as his friends and changed their hearts forever. We've been given "towels" too, Bill says. They've got our name on 'em, and we'd better bend down and use 'em. We've got to love our own towel (our life and ministry, whatever shape that takes) and not covet someone else's, and we certainly shouldn't shove our towel (proof of how hard we're working) in anyone's face.

Which leads us to the last section, which puts it all together. That last thing is truth, a rich and full-bodied understanding of God's ways, so that our ways will become more like His. This transforms tables into healing places and towel-skills into evidence of love.

The whole book is extremely practical, exploring support and accountability and what it means to tell our stories and receive the stories of others. There's definitely something for each of us to learn here, either a whole new subject or a refresher course.

I thank Baker Books for providing me with a review copy.

We as humans are built for community. We are hardwired to have friends and people in our lives that we do life together with. We are not made to live this life on our own. This is why when we see people who isolate themselves, we would not say they are living life to the fullest. We would agree they have withdrawn from reality and the world around them. By choosing to follow Christ, we become part of a community, part of the body of Christ. It is impossible to fully be a Christian and not involved in a community of believers in some way. You might disagree with that but as you read through the Bible, you see that God intended for us to be in community. God Himself is about community in that He created us for relationship with Him. Unfortunately, today we have become so connected through social media and the internet through smartphones and other devices we have actually become disconnected. And this is the world we live in today, a world full of people who desire community, some without fully knowing it, but who are in some ways running away from community. There are even people who call themselves Christians who are not involved in a community.

Bill Donahue addresses this issue head on for followers of Christ. In The Irresistible Community, he tackles what Christian community should mean, be about and what it should look like. Jesus has extended a call and offer for all people to follow Him and be involved in a community of Christ followers. It is only through this community that we are able to experience all God intended life to be about. The title itself helps us to understand that when Christian community is lived out and done right, it is attractive, even to those who do not have a relationship with Jesus Christ. If Jesus was attractive to the sinners around Him, shouldnt His church be the same way? Shouldnt we be living in such a way that it causes those around us to wonder what we have?

The title of this book includes the tag line An invitation to life together which is what I believe God wants us to do, live life together. But how do we do that? How do we live life together? We are all messy and we have lives that cause people to not want to know us so shouldnt I keep people at a distance? Dr. Donahue helps the reader understand how life can be done together in community and done in a way so people are drawn to it and not turned away from it. The Irresistible Community is divided into 3 parts: join the fellowship of the table, practice the ministry of the towel and live in the circle of truth. To truly experience community the way God intends, each of these 3 parts has to be included. I have experienced this in my own life, when I am involved with a group of Christians, our lives have been greatly impacted when we have times of fellowship around a table, make time to serve together and then also allow the truth of Gods Word to guide us, community happens and there is nothing greater in this life. Unfortunately today, this has been lost, even in the church. The church should be a community of people who understand the church is who they are, it is not simply a building or something they do on Sundays or special holidays.

Read this statement which is taken from the back cover of the book:

Using the relationship of Jesus to His disciples in the upper room, Bill Donahue presents a simple but compelling approach to community life. Using a table, a towel, and the truth, Jesus created an irresistible community where everyone found a place to belong, lived fully in the truth, and served others with joy. (Back cover)

As you read this book, you will find yourself longing for this type of community wherever you are. Why does this longing grow within us? Because it is why we were created. Bill Donahue addresses the topic/issue of Christian community in a thought provoking manner that will challenge but also encourage and inspire you to look for community in your own life. Though living in community is not always easy, he helps us see that there is more life to be experienced in community than can be experienced outside of it. This book is one that I would highly recommend anyone currently serving in Christian ministry to read as well as those who see themselves in some type of ministry in the future. This book would also be a great asset for any church planter. Go get a copy for yourself, or a friend or your pastor, it will be well worth it.

The Irresistible Community is one of those books you just want to dog-ear, highlight and note take, the whole way through it! Buuuut, I'm not one of those people....so I just book marked many of my favourite spots...and then decided I should just re-read it again after! Yes, it was that good!

It was that good in that Mr. Donahue writes all about an area that I think is very much neglected and or missing in many 'churches' today! The theme of the book is all about building a strong, healthy and biblical community within the church(body). Using three components of the last supper, the table, the towel and the truth, Donahue builds a convincing and inspiring case about the need of community for believers and what that should look like.

The only thing I did not like about the book was the opening of each chapter, and this is truly just a personal opinion thing. The author begins each chapter with a short piece written as from a first person perspective of each of the twelve disciples. He writes well but for me, I'm never a fan of people adding to what we know in scripture about the thoughts and feelings of the people in the Bible. I chose to not watch movies that portray the same idea, not saying there is anything wrong with it and I know people who greatly enjoy this, but it's not for me.

But honestly that was all I did not like! I look forward to reading The Irresistible Community again and will maybe break my rule of keeping it pristine and really get into it with highlighters, pen and note book! I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to grow in a community feel with other believers, to better understand how we should respond, care and act with our brothers and sisters in the Lord and what our calling to our local communities should be as children of God.

I received a copy of this book, from the publisher, in exchange for my unbiased review.

I enjoyed this book, partly because it was so accessible and not overly intellectual. It is so refreshing to read a book that is infused with both storytelling, scripture and life stories. The idea of community is something I had never given much thought to, however this book showed me that it was more important than I was giving it credit for. Jesus' time on Earth was characterized by a strong community that lived and breathed the Christian life. After reading this book, I found a strong desire to go find a group of men and women to join who could live alongside me, encourage me, and pray for me. I want that same community that Donahue encourages believers to find. The book was an easy read that still managed to challenge my preconceived thoughts while not seeming too overly intellectual and theological. I enjoyed it. 4/5 stars :)

    SUMMARY:

Set around the topics of table, towel and truth, The Irresistible Community explains and encourages the need to be a part of a group. Acceptance, inclusion and ownership coincide in fellowship with Jesus. Modeling the relationship of Jesus with his disciples, Bill Donahue stresses the importance of belonging to a community for all

    A PENNY FOR MY THOUGHTS:

I found the organization of this book to be very effective and creative. Introducing each disciple at the beginning of each chapter was a unique approach which set the stage for community involvement. Coordinated into three sections, (table=manners, any community setting, picking your seattowel=serving, not giving up, arrangement at tabletruth=honesty, knowing the difference, being kind), I was able to connect as the theme continued entirely throughout the book. Belonging can be such a powerful tool in bringing people to faith, along with the influence of being a member of a local neighborhood, both ideas which are developed in attainable manners. Perfect as a Bible study or ministry, The Irresistible Community was well done.

    RATING:
