Once again Mary Connealy has written an exciting yet endearing tale set in the west. Book one of The Lumber Baron's Daughters series, The Element of Love was the first of a trilogy featuring the Stiles sisters who were forced to leave their beloved home to escape unwanted marriages arranged by their wicked stepfather. Their exciting escape set the pace for the rest of the series and left a lot to live up to. In my opinion, book two of the series Inventions of the Heart continues the standards set by the first.

In book one, most readers will suspect that there is an attraction between Zane the rancher and sister Michelle. Their story takes precedence in Inventions of the Heart as she continues to hide out from her stepfather at Two Harts Ranch. As expected, even more action, danger, and romance are in store along with glimpses into the lives of Michelle's sisters and other characters introduced in the first book. A few surprises are in store as well as events that most readers expect.

Needless to say, Inventions of the Heart was a fun and satisfying read and I look forward to reading the final installment soon.

I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book provided by Bethany House, a division of Baker Publishing Group. A favorable review was not required. All views expressed are my own.

This novel is the second in The Lumber Baron's Daughters series and is a good addition to the family story. There are three daughters so three stories to be told. It is the characters that make these books so good. The daughters are brave and strong women. In an era when women were not thought to be capable of men's job, they are each superior in design or engineering or blowing up things. It was interesting to see how inventions came to their minds and how they were created.

In addition to strong female characters, there is a good deal of suspense and a smattering of humor. The suspense is based on conditions revealed in the first novel in the series so that one should be read first to fully grasp this one.

I like that Connealy has written this novel so that Michelle's story is complete. There is one sister yet to fulfill her destiny so I'll be watching for the final book in this series. This is a good novel for readers who like historical romantic suspense with humor and a good faith message too.

I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.

Inventions of the Heart is a sweet faith based novel set in California during the usual western era. The cover is whimsical and drew me in.

This is the first that I've read of Mary Connealy. Since I hadn't read the first book in this series, I really didn't have any expectations. Being introduced to these characters was intriguing and kept the plot hopping as there was just so much happening.

In the typical western book fashion there were strong willed women and protective men. The bad guys were easy to dislike and very nefarious. The sisters all are brilliant and we're told this often. They each have a field of expertise and enhance the lives of those around them. The themes of family, friendship and faith run very deeply throughout this. Biblical scripture is quoted as a foundation for personal beliefs.

I will admit that the writing style threw me at first. The descriptions and sentence structures could have been added to, making this a bit more reader friendly. Otherwise, this is a quick read that will give you an adventure and whisk you away into a bygone era.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author and publisher in exchange for an honest review. All views expressed are my personal opinion and have not been influenced.

I always like Mary's female leads- they're tough, intelligent, talented and godly women. The Stiles sisters and their mother are just such individuals, not letting the difficulties they face turn them into timid victims but tenaciously keeping on until they emerge victorious.

One thing I was uncomfortable with however, was, what for me were a few "too much information" moments in a young married couple's private interactions. Not that there was anything overly sensual, but I do not like, as the reader, to feel like I'm the third person in the bedroom when the newly married couple are on the cusp of getting to know each other in the biblical sense. Nothing was in any way explicit, but I thought it just went a bit too far and detracted from the story. Another time there was mention of one of the after effects of intimate relations that I felt to be unnecessary and inappropriate. Other than those issues, I enjoyed Michelle's story and am looking forward to Jilly's next, and seeing Edgar get his comeuppance!

This is book two in the Lumber Baron's Daughters series and even though you can read it, enjoy it and understand it without reading book one, The Element of Love. I would highly suggest reading book one first to fully get all the enjoyment out of this one. Then it sets you up to eagerly await book three, A Model of Devotion. I enjoyed getting to know the Stiles sisters. I love that we stay involved in all their lives throughout this series. This book we follow Michelle Stiles and Zane Hart. I love all the twist and turns, humor, romance, family and more in this book. I can't wait for book three.

I was given a copy of this book for my honest opinion.
