JeaniePhoenix, AZAge: 55-65Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Faith and Crisis" Where the Rubber Meets the RoadJuly 26, 2016JeaniePhoenix, AZAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Intertwined is a challenging, yet satisfying read about two broken families in which one of each of the parents believes in Jesus in spite of the crises faced. It is about depth of character and spiritual lessons which make this powerful book one that should not be missed. This seasoned author, includes excellent descriptive prose, realistic conversation, and real life challenges.
Tammys husband walked out on her after twelve years of marriage, moving in with another woman. Brody rarely follows through on promises made to see their children. Tammy works as an organ procurement coordinator, facing life and death situations daily. Work hours are crisis-driven, around the clock; then her favorite babysitter has to quit due to family needs. Tammys list of people to consider was short. Her best friend, Vanessa, helped when she could.
Nick, a former classmate of Tammys, is the father of two boys and is in custody battles with his ex-wife. During a scheduled visitation, Nick left his boys at a neighborhood barbecue where they had been until he received a call that his restaurant was on fire. Before he arrived at the fire, his neighbor called and told him that his 13-year-old son Payton had just been seriously injured by a hit-and-run driver. Jeremy, his seven year old son, was having a hard time with the changes.
Tammys parents were so concerned about her and her children when she lost her sitter that they got into their RV and went to visit her with short notice. They would stay as long as she needed them, hoping Tammy would evaluate her life and move back with them. Thankfully her 13 year old daughter Becky and younger son Tylan were happy to see them.
Tammy and Nick had been best friends throughout school, and were slowly becoming friends again after running into each other at the hospital during Paytons surgery. This time both of them are Christians, which changes their outlook and how they live. The needs of her children, and his desire to change the custody situation, are their top priority, even as Tammy tries to keep her job and Nick tries to rebuild his restaurant.
The main characters were extremely likable and realistic. Tammy, Nick, and Tammys parents are very well defined, and I really liked Tammy and her spirit of independence. I also liked Nick and empathized with his situations.
The novel is executed with excellence, through the characters faith journeys, respective crises, and spiritual lessons. This novel pulled me in from the beginning and held my attention through the end. This is definitely a book to be read with tissues handy! It is commendable that the spiritual lessons can be applied for both single and married folks, with or without children, and it is easy for the reader to see themselves through the characters. Overall, the novel was very satisfying even while this reader had a few ouch moments for the lessons I need to learn! The author clearly shines the love of Christ, the value of prayer, and the need a Christian has for community within the body of Christ without being preachy. I highly recommend Intertwined to women of any age including book clubs; it is definitely a novel to be read, discussed, and re-read.
With a grateful heart, I won a copy of this book from the author through Lena Nelson Dooleys Blogspot and am providing an honest review. All opinions are my own, and no monetary compensation has been received for this review.
lcjohnson1988IndianaAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5great bookNovember 16, 2015lcjohnson1988IndianaAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5The story is definitely a heart-tugging, attention-grabbing, emotional rollercoaster kind of novel. The main female character is named Tammy. She finds her marriage falling apart, single-parenting is more than a challenge, her work as an organ procurement coordinator fulfilling and she seeks to speak the gospel message to her clients.
Nick is a divorcee who loses his firstborn son in an accident, which is how his and Tammys paths cross again. They had not seen each other since high school ten years ago. Nick is dealing with grief and an ex-wife who is keeping their other son away from him as she blames him for the death of their first son.
I found the themes of prayer, leaning on the Lord, forgiveness, trust and more very refreshing to see in the tale. The author shows us through other minor characters what unforgiveness, bitterness and other unresolved feelings can do to an individual as well as having a rippling effect on others.
Another aspect of the story that brings the aspect of reality to it is that resolving issues and dealing with emotions takes time. The subplot of a father unknown by his son and learning what he was told about his father was not truth caused Nick to go looking to find out what really became of his dad. The book doesnt tie up all the various threads into nice packages with some threads are left hanging. I think that leaves it to the readers imagination as to how situations can possibly be resolved.
I highly recommend Jennifers novel and consider the many ways we can stand beside a friend, learn from others mistakes and as well as our own. Readers will also be shown that finding the fulfillment we seek isnt in a paycheck, but in sharing Jesus with whomever we meet this side of heaven!
Shannon Taylor Vannatter5 Stars Out Of 5Packs an emotional punchOctober 27, 2015Shannon Taylor VannatterQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0I loved this book and was fully invested in Tammy and Nick from the beginning. The emotional punch this story packs left me breathless. But even though these characters face the hard stuff that none of us want to, they still get to be happy in the end. I appreciated the author's willingness to show that some marriages aren't repairable after adultery, instead of the pat forgive and start over so many Christian books employ. Yes forgiveness is necessary, but forgiveness doesn't always fix everything in the real world. Jennifer takes risks many authors shy away from and I'm always glad I went along for the ride.
I was honored to be contacted by her publisher to endorse this book. My endorsement: Jennifer Slattery scored again with this one. A horrific accident intertwines two lives. Her characters are so authentic, their struggles with life and faith so genuine, her stories so gritty and real. I think about her fictional people long after I turn the last page.
KavRCanadaGender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Fantastic readOctober 20, 2015KavRCanadaGender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 0Meets Expectations: 5Slattery sure knows how to put the real into realistic fiction. This book packs more than one emotional wallop that left me gasping for breath a time or two. And spitting-nails mad. My tummy was tied in knots the whole read. A gritty novel that explores some pretty harsh realities. But the story isn't without hope and the author does an exceptional job of sharing the power of Christ's redeeming love. Never preachy, there is still a relentless witness woven into every scene. And what I really love about this book is that while Tammy and Nick are Christian they are by no means perfect. They struggle with their own brokenness and sometimes it's messy. Watching them stretch and grow helped me assess and even re-evaluate some issues in my own life. An intense read that has the potential to spark great discussions in a book club.
My thanks to the publisher and author for supplying me with a copy of this book.
