Product Description

As world Christianity shifts from the first world to the third, perspectives and methods are also coming under the microscope. Many traditional and comfortable models of Christianity are in flux due to this development, and to this end Interpreting Contemporary Christianity has been compiled. Over a dozen experts and writers on world Christianity come together to address various issues such as new evangelical universities, Pentecostal influences, and African Christian expressions. An in-depth bibliography with hundreds of additional resources makes this book a wealth of information on this burgeoning topic.

Publisher's Description

In this multidisciplinary interpretation of world Christianity and the changing shape of the global religious landscape, scholars consider the complex dynamics shaping Christianity's recent expansion in all parts of the globe. They view the explanations of homogenization or American cultural influence as being necessarily limited and point to the far more varied intersections of external influence and indigenous appropriation. The geographical coverage and the voices from various corners of the globe exemplify the shift of Christianity's center of gravity away from the northern hemisphere. New voices, new methods, and new perspectives emerge here.

Editorial Reviews

Theological Studies
"Two overarching elements distinguish this work from other edited proceedings. First, the collection provides impressive historical snapshots that will satisfy readers of different interests. . . A second strength is the solid research and scholarship evident throughout the essays. . . I recommend the text for those interested in missiology and globalization."

International Review of Mission
"Gathers some unique voices and diverse contributions on the international discourse on globalization and Christianity. . . . Will certainly become one standard reference volume for anybody interested in the manifold processes of Christianity as a ’migrant religion’ involved in complex processes of ’globalization from below.’"

PentecoStudies
"Interpreting Contemporary Christianity provides a strong argument for a nuanced approach to global and local issues in Christian faith. . . . A significant contribution."
