Darren Hom5 Stars Out Of 5September 17, 2000Darren HomThe author has an excellent understanding of what true exegesis (interpretation of a text is): more than just a problem of grammar and word-studies, exegesis is learning how to use language as a tool to read the text in context. Instead of focusing on interpreting isolated sentences, his purpose is to teach a student how to see how the context of a sentence determines its meaning. He correctly links the meaning of a text to the intent of the author, and specifically connects the author's intent to the author's purpose: to communicate certain ideas to his audience in a specific situation. Once we can understand the historical context (author, audience, and situation) as well as the literary context (reading entire book, not just the sentence in question, for context), we are in a place to understand what the author intended to say much more clearly than reading the sentence in isolation, which is an artificial method of interpreting someone's statements. This book is definitely different than other Greek grammars, and I believe it is something that reasonable exegetes like Gordon Fee, Richard Stein, and F.F. Bruce would be happy to see. God has provided a blessing through this book!
