Intentional Preaching, written by Meirwyn Walters, is the handy guide that every preacher needs. In preparing and delivering their sermons, preachers make dozens of decisions, some intentionally, many perhaps less so. Why not make thoughtful decisions for everything that goes into preaching a good sermon? From first words to hand gestures, choosing a text, masterful use of exegesis, captivating illustrations, titles, approaches to reading Scripture, use of voice, PowerPoint, applications that stick, and scores of other aspects of sermon preparation and delivery, this book explores the panoply of elements in good preaching.
Targeted at preachers, the book consists of over 100 “squiblets” ranging from a sentence to three or four pages, each on a particular aspect of preaching. Some are quite short, offering practical wisdom, some provide specific advice and tools, and some contain vignettes from the field. In this delightful and sage book, there is something for every preacher to improve his or her preaching.

“If you ever preach, but somehow miss this excellent book on how to do so better, the dull stares of congregations may haunt you for decades to come! You have been warned. Incidentally, this is just the book to prevent that from happening! Seriously.”
New York Times best-selling author of Martin Luther
Host of the nationally syndicated Eric Metaxas Radio Show
“This is a gem of a book chock-full of applicable insights you will not find in other preaching books. Even a few minutes spent reading this book amidst a pastor’s busy week is guaranteed to strengthen that week’s sermon. Walters’s work is winsome, passionate, and relentlessly practical, and I recommend it to everyone who wants to be a better preacher.”
—Nelson E. Ould, Lead Pastor
Community West Church, Henrico, Virginia
“Preaching is more, but not less, than making a good argument from a text. What better feedback from the faithful can we get than that which is shaped by years of legal training and experience—not to mention, growing up with a seasoned preacher! Meirwyn Walters’s reflections here reward not only us preachers but our hearers. I heartily recommend this book!”
J. Gresham Machen Professor of
Systematic Theology and Apologetics
Westminster Seminary California
“A lot of books have been written about preaching by those who spend their time standing behind a pulpit. Few, if any, have been written about preaching by those who occupy the pew. Meirwyn Walters is uniquely qualified for such a task, and he “brings it” in his book Intentional Preaching. If you’re a preacher like Meirwyn’s legendary father, read this book and consider his practical advice and conceptual reflections as a handbook to strengthen your sermons. If you’re a pew-sitter like Meirwyn, then ponder his thoughts on how to listen better and grow more through the weekly homily you receive. I know Meirwyn as a dear friend, and his observations are not only insightful, but the heart of this author wants nothing less than to build up the church. A must-read for all churchgoers and church leaders.”
