An inside look at the faith that guides the all-stars.
The St. Louis Cardinals have long been one of the most successful franchises in the major leagues. They have won 11 World Series titles and some of the most famous players in the history of the game have worn the storied Birds on the Bat uniform.
While that on-field success has been well documented, Intentional Walk is the first book which goes beyond the story of what happens on the field to take an in-depth look at the men inside the Cardinal uniforms, and examine how their strong Christian faith is one of the driving forces behind their success.
Intentional Walk features the stories of Adam Wainwright, David Freese, Lance Berkman, Matt Holliday, Carlos Beltran, Jason Motte and other members of the 2012 Cardinals, written as those players and the rest of the team tried to repeat the 2011 world championship. The book talks about how they became Christians and offers their testimony about what it means for them to have God play such a prominent role in their lives.
Playing for first-year manager Mike Matheny, a strong Christian as well, these men talk about their success and failure, about the challenges that come from playing baseball at the highest level, and how thankful and blessed they are to have that God-given ability. In the end, however, what is far more important to them is their life-long relationship they have established with Jesus Christ.
Rob Rains is the author of 31 books, mostly on baseball and many about the St. Louis Cardinals. His list of biographies or autobiographies of Cardinals includes Tony La Russa, Albert Pujols, Mark McGwire, Jack Buck, Red Schoendienst, and Ozzie Smith. He is a lifetime member of the Baseball Hall of Fame and a lifetime member of the Baseball Writers Association of America. He also is the cohost of a daily radio talk show in St. Louis and an adjunct professor at Webster University.
IreneUnited States5 Stars Out Of 5Great for a baseball fanJanuary 11, 2014IreneUnited StatesQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This is a great book for any sports fan who is a Christian. I liked the viewpoint of the book. I found it interesting to read about the Cardinals baseball team and their winning history. Seeing this history from a Christian point of view was entertaining as well as uplifting! I gave this book 5/5 stars. I would recommend this book to any fans of baseball or sports. I would also recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading stories of the different ways the Lord blesses people who do their best to live for him.
I would like to thank the publisher for the copy of this book I enjoyed reading. I gave an honest review based on my opinion of what I read.
jj2010CanadaAge: 45-54Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Interesting baseball bookAugust 5, 2013jj2010CanadaAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4This book is like a biography of the manager, trainer and some players of the St. Louis Cardinals. It's a easy read. It follows their lives as they go thru the 2012 season, trying to repeat as World Series Champs.
It was interesting to learn that even though they are professional athletes, they have bad days at the office, just like the rest of us. I found it to be a little surfacey at times, I was hoping they would go more in depth or get a little more personal with the team member, but that is always limited in a book format I suppose. I would recommend this to friends who follow sports or who enjoy reading about other Christians in high profile professions.
I received this book free from the publisher through the BookSneeze®.com book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own
mojoTexasAge: 35-44Gender: male4 Stars Out Of 5Not so much a book about baseballJuly 11, 2013mojoTexasAge: 35-44Gender: maleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4Rob Rains is a former National League beat writer for USA Today's Baseball Weekly and for three years covered the St. Louis Cardinals for the St. Louis Globe-Democrat until its collapse in the 1980s. HIs latest book, Intentional Walk: An Inside Look at the Faith That Drives the St. Louis Cardinals is a look "inside" the faith that guides this all-star team.
Now personally, I am not into baseball, let alone the Cardinals. My favorite team is the Chicago Cubs and it's primarily because I like their cap. And if you're not a big baseball person either, that's ok. This isn't really what the book is about.
Yes, this book uses the example of the St. Louis Cardinals throughout, but it is more about the lives of these players and how they saw God in their lives. Each chapter introduces you to a new member of the Cardinals franchise and illustrates how God pulled them through the highs and lows of their life.
I think through a good reading, the reader becomes more aware of just how many professional athletes are Christians. So while it may not be a book for the "die-hard" sports fan, it is still a book about what it means to be a Christian.
Rob Rains has an extensive career at being a writer, and so his author's voice is easy to listen to and he does his best to enable even the not-so-familiar to follow along.

Phronsie HowellAge: 25-34Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5July 9, 2013Phronsie HowellAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5If you've ever wondered what makes the St. Louis Cardinals so different from other MLB teams, I would highly suggest reading "Intentional Walk" by Rob Rains. There are numerous books on the market that talk stats and strategy, but this is the only one I've seen that goes deeper.
"Intentional Walk" is a great look at the faith of several prominent members of the 2012 Cardinals team. From managers to players to support staff, see what keeps these men grounded while they play in "America's Favorite Past-time".
I, personally, have been a Cardinals fan for pretty much as long as I can remember. Learning about how their faith plays such a big part of their lives really solidified my liking of the team. I admire their commitment to their beliefs and how unashamed they are to live them out. Highly recommended reading!

ReediIllinoisAge: Over 65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Intentional Walk: St. Louis CardinalsJune 27, 2013ReediIllinoisAge: Over 65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5An inspirational look at the 2013 Cardinals. When you're a big fan like my husband and I are, this is just an exceptional read. Each chapter about an individual player; their decision to live for Christ; their everyday walk -- their "intentional" walk with the Lord. It's uplifting and should be an encouragement to all those young ballplayers out there that you can be a Christian and still maintain your testimony.
