Tell us a little about yourself. Since 1971 I have been a Christian college
educator, teaching communication courses to over
6,000 students -- most recently at Liberty
University in Virginia. Before teaching I was a
radio-TV news writer/reporter and news anchor.
It was while hosting the daily inspirational
radio program "A Quiet Place" that the idea came
to put the brief stories into a book. The
result is "On This Day".
What was your motivation behind this project? After eight years on daily, late-night radio, the best of the stories used on the program (and many others) were put into book form. Since the original "On This Day" was published in 1989, more than 30,000 copies have been sold. The current book is a complete update of historic events, birthdays and inspiring stories for each day of the year -- great for the "trivia lover and innately curious."
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? If you're looking for daily inspiration in an easy-to-read, intriguing format "On This Day" is the book for you. Readers call it "the book for people who don't like books" as each day's one- page entry can be read in less than five minutes and proves to be as "addictive" as munching snacks (with a whole lot fewer calories)!
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? I've always enjoyed a good story. Starting with my local pastor who used many illustrations in his sermons and continuing through to the late-night program, NightSounds with Bill Pearce, which I regularly enjoyed as an adult, I've collected hundreds of inspiring stories ("parables") that I've enjoyed being able to pass along to others.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: If you like trivia, or are looking for a gift for someone who "has everything" or one who is "not normally into books" check out "On This Day." It makes a great witnessing tool for a neighbor or boss who is not a believer but who loves short, inspiring stories, history or trivia. The book's website: www.onthisdayonline.com features a clear-cut plan of salvation and other resources.
