Series: Swindoll's Living Insights New Testament Commentary

Publisher's Description

Insights on Acts explores the expansion of the early church throughout the Roman world in the continuing 15-volume Swindoll’s Living Insights New Testament Commentary series. This never-before-released volume draws on Gold Medallion Award–winner Chuck Swindoll’s 50 years of experience with studying and preaching God’s Word. His deep insight, signature easygoing style, and humor bring a warmth and practical accessibility not often found in commentaries.

Each volume combines verse-by-verse commentary, charts, maps, photos, key terms, and background articles with practical application. The newly updated volumes now include parallel presentations of the NLT and NASB before each section. This series is a must-have for pastors, teachers, and anyone else who is seeking a deeply practical resource for exploring God’s Word.

"cessationism is the doctrine that spiritual gifts such as speaking in tongues, prophecy and healing ceased with the original twelve apostles." I'm not sure if Swindoll fully fits that label but he's not far off. His assumption that the miraculous gifts such as tongues and prophecy and the miraculous ministry offices have ceased is plainly stated, so Pentecostals and Charismatics will have a problem with that aspect of his commentary. The rest of his commentary is great as usual. I have read most of his "Living Insights New Testament Commentary" and love and recommend them. But his prejudice against the above bothered me so much I stopped reading after about 1/3rd of the way through. I'm not saying I've ever met a modern day apostle or prophet or someone with a ministry of signs & wonders. I think the televangelists etc. who claim to have such ministries are most likely frauds. My problem is that the bible does not definitely say that these gifts and offices would cease after the apostles, but an otherwise excellent teacher like Swindoll says it does and with weak arguments too. It's very disappointing that he seems to have a blind spot on the subject. It's not consistent with his usual exhaustive clarity on other areas of doctrine. I'd feel a lot better if he said the bible is not definitive about the gifts ceasing but there are no known persons in history or currently, who could meet the biblical definition of apostle or prophet or miracle worker etc.
