The natural human impulse is to run from attack. Jim Downingalong with countless other soldiers and sailors at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941ran toward it, fighting to rescue his fellow navy men, to protect loved ones and civilians on the island, and to find the redemptive path forward from a devastating war. We are protected from war these days, but there was a time when war was very present in our lives, and in The Other Side of Infamy we learn from a veteran of Pearl Harbor and World War II what it means to follow Jesus into and through every danger, toil, and snare.

Downing uses the Pearl Harbor experience as a base board for his life story focusing a lot of the book on his journey to Christianity.
This is a really good book. It's full of detail and is well written. I would recommend it to not only a history buff, but anyone. I received this book from Tyndale Publishing in exchange for an honest review.
Deuce SkunksSpringfield, MOAge: 25-34Gender: Female4 Stars Out Of 5Not That Much About Pearl Harbor - A Great Story About The Power Of FaithDecember 10, 2016Deuce SkunksSpringfield, MOAge: 25-34Gender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 4The Other Side Of Infamy: My Journey Through Pearl Harbor And The World Of War by Jim Downing with James Lund is a humbling biography about the journey of life once you let God lead you. The subtitle implies that this is mostly a story about Pearl Harbor and World War II, which is why I ordered it. That's not a very accurate perception of the depths of this book.
It starts out a while before the Great Depression, during Jim's childhood. He talks about growing up in small-town Missouri, and how different the world was then. As the book progresses, we journey into his adulthood and hisnavy career. While there are a few chapters on Pearl Harbor and World War II, the main emphasis of this part of his life isn't about the conditions of the outer world.
Instead he shares his insight from finding Jesus through the help of Dawson Trotman, the founder of The Navigators. After fleeing Trotman's invitations to follow Christ, he finally gives in and later joins the cause for discipleship, becoming a missionary of sorts and spreading God's word throughout the ships he served on.
I found Jim's story to be very encouraging and a wonderful reminder that God has a master plan for all of us. I was slightly disappointed in how little the book actually focuses on World War II, but by the end of the book I was very happy with my decision to keep reading it. Jim is living proof that God blesses those who follow Him. I look forward to reading his previous books to learn more about his time spent serving the Lord. 4/5 stars

Cricket5 Stars Out Of 5Powerful Memoir of God's Presence in the Midst of WarDecember 2, 2016CricketQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5A short time before the beginning of World War I, Jim Downing was born in a small town in Missouri where his father owned a country store. Some of his earliest memories came as he sat with and on the laps of seven men on loafers benches around a huge wood stove in the store where his parents worked. As this group of men in their fifties and sixties sat chewing tobacco and talking about issues of the day, Jim tried to sort out what it all meant. What he knew for certain was that he loved this time with the men who came to be known as the Spit and Argue Club. He was after all, a silent member of the club.
Through them he would learn about the war to end all wars and the challenges that the depression had brought their way. He would also develop a love of country that allowed him to dream the dream of one-day becoming president of the United States. Books about the adventures of Lou Wetzel and Betty Zane in Zane Grey westerns, as well as Horatio Alger books stoked his imagination for the possible.
The Other Side of Infamy invites you to walk through Jims life and many turning points for him and his family that I cannot begin to detail here. You get an intimate glimpse of how the Lord moves in his life, career, and ultimately ministry over the course of his lifetime. You see the evidences of Gods faithfulness and Jims growth in obedience that continues to the end of the booka faithful servant at the age of 103 still speaking out for Christ, reaching millions of people.
Teacher5 Stars Out Of 5Sustaining FaithOctober 27, 2016TeacherQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Since my dad was on board a ship at Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941, this book drew my attention to it, but the intimate way the story of Jim's life is told kept me reading. As Jim takes us through his early life growing up in Plevna, Missouri, his career in the Navy, and his growing relationship with understanding who Jesus is, he shows how our faith can sustain us during troubled times. What impressed me most with Jim's memoir, besides the fact he is 103 years old and still travels the country speaking of his faith on behalf of the Navigators, is how once he gave his life completely to Jesus, he never stopped looking for opportunities to spread his faith no matter where God placed him.
Tyndale House Publishers provided me with a complimentary copy of this book for a fair and honest review, which is exactly what I gave.
