Product Description

On the Incarnation, though completed before the full force of the Arian controversy over the Trinity was felt, provided the first major theological articulation of the doctrine of the incarnation and defense of orthodox trinitarianism. Though ratified by the Nicean council, Athanasius' views cost him dearly and yet the orthodox position has held sway in church history.

This background establishes Athanasius' work as a basic required text for understanding the Christian tradition for liturgical, theological, and individual reasons. Christians will find here much wrestle with, much to learn from, and much worth submitting the mind to. An exc3ellent resource for personal piety and ecumenical dialogue, this compact but handsome volume will richly reward all of its readers.

I bought this book because I'm writing a commentary on the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed of 381 A.D. (which is the modified and expanded version of the Creed put forth by the Council of Nicea at which Athanasius played a dominant role). No study of Nicene Christianity would be complete without reading what the major players wrote.

Because the primary issue addressed at the Council of Nicea in 325 A.D. was one of Christology, Athanasius' work on the Incarnation is an essential read - particularly since Athanasius was the hero deacon who so valiantly defended the orthodox position against the heretical views of Bishop Arius. What does orthodox Christianity believe about Christ's divinity, His humanity, etc. and how did that belief come about? Athanasius' work gives us an unfiltered (except in the process of translating from one language to another) understanding of fourth century orthodox Christian thought on the question that is, to use the American idiom, straight from the horse's mouth.

Regardless of your opinion regarding the early creeds, their contribution to core Christian doctrines we so often take for granted today was foundational.

Athanasius reacted against the Arian heresy in the Council of Nicaea and stood firm in defense and affirmation of the Trinity. "On the Incarnation," St.Athanasius goes step by step into the plan of salvation, almost like an evangelistic tract showing the creation and fall and the divine dilemma of human's sin with the divine solution: the incarnation, the substitutionary atonement and resurrection of Christ. He rightly points to the divinity of Jesus and answers biblically the refutation of Jews and gentiles concerning His deity. Very good reading.

If you only have the time, or interest, to read one commentary on the mystery of the Incarnation of Christ, this work is the one you should read. It has long been regarded as the decisive work presenting the orthodox view of the Christ's becoming flesh and all it's implications and meaning for mankind. This is an excellent translation and has an interesting introduction by C.S. Lewis.

Reading this work gives a profound appreciation of a great mystery of what St Athanasius best summed it up himself "At one and the same timethis is the wonder as Man He was living a human life, and as Word He was sustaining the life of the universe, and as Son He was in constant union with the Father."
