Publisher's Description

Instant New York Times Bestseller

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Karen Kingsbury comes a brand-new Baxter Family novel about a beloved high school principal who starts a Bible Study to improve the lives of his struggling students, only to become the national focus of a controversial lawsuit.

Hamilton High Principal Wendell Quinn is tired of the violence, drug abuse, teen pregnancies, and low expectations at his Indianapolis school. A single father of four, Quinn is a Christian and a family man. He wants to see change in his community, so he starts a voluntary after-school Bible Study and prayer program. He knows he is risking his job by leading the program, but the high turnout at every meeting encourages him.

A year later, violence and gang activity are down, test scores are up, and drug use and teen pregnancy have plummeted. The program is clearly working—until one parent calls the press. Now Quinn faces a lawsuit that could ruin everything.

With a storm of national attention and criticism, Quinn is at a crossroads—he must choose whether to cave in and shut down the program or stand up for himself and his students. The battle comes with a high cost, and Quinn wants just one attorney on his side for this fight: Luke Baxter. In This Moment is an inspiring, relevant story about the nuances of religious freedom and how a group of determined people just might restore the meaning of faith in today’s culture.

Her last dozen titles have topped bestseller lists and many of her novels are under development with Hallmark Films and as major motion pictures. Her Baxter Family books are being developed into a TV series slated for major network viewing sometime in the next year. Karen is also an adjunct professor of writing at Liberty University. In 2001 she and her husband, Don, adopted three boys from Haiti, doubling their family in a matter of months. Today the couple has joined the ranks of empty nesters, living in Tennessee near five of their adult children.

Editorial Reviews

"An interesting story about the modern climate of religious freedom. . ."
"Kingsbury's issue-oriented follow up to Love Story offers a timely look at the crossroads of public law and religious freedom. Although the topic can be volatile, the author handles it in a sensitive manner, creating room for discourse and not discord."

Working in the educational field for as many years as I have, I can relate to Karen Kingsbury's newest novel, "In This Moment," all too well. This story is so relevant and will open your eyes to the rapidly changing world we now live in! I loved how the Baxter Family was incorporated throughout the story, as well as Aspyn the angel from KK's Angels Walking Series. I highly encourage you to read this book! It is so powerful and inspirational!! I could go on and on, but trust me when I say... this book is a MUST READ!!! And once you start reading it, you won't be able to put it down! Seriously, it's that good!

Not only does Karen bring back the Baxter family but she brings up a very timely subject, separation of church and state. That said, this is a stand alone book and you don't need to have read any of the Baxter family books to enjoy this. This book focuses on the youngest Baxter sibling, Luke, who is a lawyer. He ends up taking on a case that he feels he might not be able to win. The case involves a principal who, after trying every means at his disposal, starts a voluntary after-school Bible study in hopes of changing the downward spiral of the students at this school. The results are amazing but a parent brings a lawsuit against the principal. Not only is this a riveting story, but many "misconceptions" that people have in today's society are brought up and answered.

Quite an interesting read full of current issues surrounding Christianity. The research for this book must have been quite extensive and time consuming. A little bit of romance and suspense thrown in with some gang violence issues and its affect on education. I loved the personal stories included but I felt like most of the book was technical in nature. There was a lot of talk about law and court room stuff. I felt like it was a bit of overkill and I wanted more of the character relationship. It was a little out of balance for my liking. It was almost like I had to question whether I was reading for pleasure or for information, whether it was a fiction or nonfiction book. It was super interesting all the current event type law stuff but just wasnt what I was hoping for in a fiction book. Overall the storyline was pretty good. I enjoyed the book but had to give it 4 stars instead of 5 because of these things mentioned.

I received a digital copy from netgalley in exchange for my honest review. I was in no way obligated to leave a positive review.

Kingsbury books are so real they feel like they could be happening in my hometown or to people I know. This really adds to the tension and drama. I could empathize with Alicia and her fear of what would happen if Wendell went ahead with his plan. The same challenges raised in the book are occurring with more frequency in our country. It made me appreciate Wendell and his willingness to proceed, believing that God, who called him to this, would be with him through it all.

This story also deals with hard issues of stalkers, racists, and workaholics in an authentic way. The blessing and strength that comes from a healthy family is portrayed in a winsome manner. The Baxter family has gone through a ton of hardships but they will always stand together and support each other.

I would highly recommend this book. It can easily be read as a stand-alone book. However, there are 24 other Baxter books that fill in a lot of their backstories. Thank you to Howard Books for providing me with a free e-copy of this book. I was not required to leave a positive review. All opinions are my own.
