"This is the way legal thrillers are meant to becompelling, intelligent, and deeply satisfying." Randy Singer, author of Rule of Law
THE POLICE SAY THE WOMAN WAS A MURDERER. EMILIE WESLEY KNOWS THEY CANT BE TALKING ABOUT HER CLIENT . . . CAN THEY?
To the world it seems obvious: Kaylene Adams killed her daughter and then was shot by police. Attorney Emilie Wesley knows a different story: Kaylene would never hurt anyone and was looking for a way out of a controlling, abusive relationship. Her death shakes Emilies belief that she can make a difference for women in violent marriages. Self-doubt plagues her as she struggles to continue her work in the wake of the tragedy.
Reid Billings thought he knew his sisterright up until he learned how she died. He discovers a letter from Kaylene begging him to fight for custody of her daughters if anything should happen to her. No attorney in her right mind would support an uncle instead of the father in a custody case, but Kaylenes letter claims Emilie Wesley will help him.
Thrown together in a race to save Kaylenes surviving daughter, Emily and Reid pursue the constantly evasive truth. If they can hang on to hope together, can they save a young girland find a future for themselves in the process?

Michele5 Stars Out Of 5Tough story, told beautifully.November 16, 2017MicheleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Emilie Wesley is a passionate attorney dedicated to getting abused women and their children out of dangerous situations. When Emilie's client, Kaylene, is found dead and accused of shooting her children, Emilie is thrust into working after hours with Kaylene's brother to prove her innocence while struggling with her own stalker.
Author Cara Putman beautifully deals with the tough subject of abuse while still showing the hope that can only be found through God. I highly recommend this series!
Irishniff5 Stars Out Of 5I couldn't turn the pages fast enough.November 10, 2017IrishniffQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Cara Putman writes another suspenseful legal thriller that will keep your attention. In the second book in the series (which could easily be read by itself), Putman continues with wonderful characters. Their friendships, their faith and lessons being learned will draw you into this story. The added romance is a nice touch too. The storyline contains domestic abuse and I appreciate how the author handled the subject matter carefully and with a solid knowledge base. For those in difficult relationships, encouragement can be found. The novel is certainly worthy of book club discussions. I can't wait for the next book. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher. All opinions in this review are my own.
Reenie5 Stars Out Of 5a riveting mysteryNovember 5, 2017ReenieQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This book deals with really tough issues like custody battles, stalkers, and domestic abuse. It was very disturbing and I longed to see things come out right for the hurting and abused.
Emilie longs to make a difference by helping women get out of abusive relationships. When a client comes to a bad end, she feels she failed and is determined to do what she can to make things right for the innocent left behind.
I loved Emilie's passion and felt she was very relatable. She questions her purposes and her work when things go wrong. She has her own past issues to deal with. She's likeable and someone I'd want to have on my side if I were in trouble.
I enjoyed trying to figure out some of the mysteries in the book. It was a fast read because I had to get to the end. There was a sense of suspense and urgency that I found riveting. I'd recommend this book to all mystery lovers.
Thank you to Thomas Nelson for providing me with a free e-copy of this book. I was not required to leave a review. All opinions are my own.
Crystal5 Stars Out Of 5Keeps You on Your ToesSeptember 12, 2017CrystalQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0About the Book
When Emilie Wesleys client, Kaylene Adams, is killed from a gunshot wound after first supposedly shooting her two daughters, Emilie is both shocked and dismayed. She simply cannot believe that the desperate woman who was trying to escape an abusive relationship and adored her daughters would commit the heinous crimes she is accused of. She soon finds an ally, however, in Kaylenes brother Reid who also believes his sister is innocent. After Reid finds a box his sister asked him to hide and discovers a letter inside penned by Kaylene begging him to protect her daughters if anything should happen to her, he and Emilie join forces to track down the truth, however elusive that truth may be. While on the hunt for information that would clear her client, Emilie finds that she, herself, is being hunted as a mysterious stalker becomes more bold in his attempts to draw her attention. And in the midst of it all, as Emilie and Reid race against the clock to rescue Kaylene's surviving daughter, both find themselves drawn to each other and the beginnings of a romance budding.
I enjoy "race against the clock" legal thrillers and Putman certainly doesn't disappoint! The reader is thrown into the angst wondering how in the world Emilie and Reid will find enough evidence to rescue Reid's niece. Putman's descriptions of how Emilie's stalker pursued her- and the mental illness behind the stalker's actions- had me creeped out and looking over my shoulder! Emilie's struggle of wanting to make a difference but feeling like she was always treading water or taking one step forward and two steps back in her work has universal appeal to most readers who can relate to the search for significance. Finally, I enjoyed Emilie and Reid's courtship- it was well paced, had both spice and tenderness, and left the reader hoping Putman will continue the series so reader's could watch their romance deepen.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. However, this review reflects an honest view of my own thoughts and opinions regarding this book.
