jglass4 Stars Out Of 5July 27, 2012jglassI had a difficult time putting it down until I had finished it. Matt Milalatos has written a humorous story that really sings. His underlying presumption is that we have all created a Jesus that we conjure up in our minds that has nothing to do with the real Jesus, but one who simply meets our needs. In the book there is this reality that all kinds of different personalities of Jesus exist.
Deena Peterson4 Stars Out Of 5Interesting....July 13, 2012Deena PetersonQuality: 4Value: 3Meets Expectations: 3I've sampled this one and find it a bit odd, yet enjoyable. I can sense controversy within its pages. As I read, I became more and more engaged in the story...but it took three or four attempts before I was really hooked.
You'll certainly find your false impression of Jesus within these pages....Matt includes a LOT of them. Not my favorite story...but worth reading once.

I was surprised to say the least, when I found that the analogy I thought was an attention grabber or illustration turned out to be the actual book.
My Imaginary Jesus is a sort of true story. It tells about the experiences of a fellow named Matt. It seemed like Matt had known this guy named 'Jesus' all his life. In fact they were really good friends. Whenever Matt needed help with something he would just call up 'Jesus' and next thing he knew poof 'Jesus' was there. But one day Matt's friend wasn't there. And that was the day that he was needed most. That day Matt's wife started bleeding and then went into contractions which resulted in a traumatic miscarriage. Matt was crushed. "Why hadn't 'Jesus' been there?"
Through a strange series of events Matt comes to the conclusion that his friend 'Jesus' is FAKE! This is the start of a search. A search to find the 'REAL' Jesus.
Matt Milalatos's writing style is engaging as well as full of unique twists such as a talking donkey and apostle Peter. While I understand that the purpose of Matt's book is to help bring you face-to face with any impostors in your own relationship with God, the flippancy with which the name 'Jesus' was used bothered me. So though I found My Imaginary Jesus engaging, my preference with such a topic would be a more serious approach.

fictionbuyerGrand Rapids, MIAge: 45-54Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5A fun look at my JesusJune 1, 2012fictionbuyerGrand Rapids, MIAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 5My Imaginary Jesus by Matt Mikalatos ( you try to say his last name, I have no idea), opens with Matt and his Jesus having coffee at a local coffee shop and a fisherman walks up to Jesus and punches him in the face. This starts an adventure for Matt that takes him to all different points around Portland Oregon. Along the way he meets many different Jesus', but none of them fit into his idea of what he is very comfortable with.
The Jesus Matt is friends with doesn't say no to Matt and would do him all kinds of favors. He even offered to fix a parking ticket for Matt.
Some of the Jesus' we meet along the way are Politcal Jesus, Beatnik Jesus, mostly dead Jesus, and Magic 8ball Jesus - he gives answers but none make any sense. They all seem to fill a need for someone, but none match up with the real Jesus. So with the help of a talking donkey and Pete the firsherman, yes that one, He sets out on the adventure of finding Jesus.
I personally wasn't sure I was going to like this book. I did because it forced me to look at the Jesus that I was picturing and following. It made me think about why my Jesus looked the way he did and did he match up with the real Jesus. It made for interesting read.
Let me also say, this book is not for everyone and it will offend some people. I recommend that everyone who is interested to read it, but consider yourself warned. :-)

the author is Matt Mikalatos.
My Imaginary Jesus is a wonderful book.
it explores the mistakes we make and the issues we have with Jesus. we want Jesus to be just like us; believe what believe, behave how we behave, and have the same opinions we have on religious, social, and political issues.
part comedy/part autobiography/part theological treatise, My Imaginary Jesus is well written and a delight to read.
Matt challenges us on our spiritual journeys and adventures with God, following Jesus, empowered by the Holy Spirit.
like Night of The Living Dead Christian, Matt's second book, My Imaginary Jesus is definitely worth reading
