- Dr. Mark O'Farrell, President Trinity College of Florida (formerly The Florida Bible Institute)

"Reading biographies of persons who have maximized their lives for Christ always inspire me. Given that reality, Jake Hanson has done us all a favor by giving us glimpses not only into Dr. Graham's college years but into the early influences that empowered Dr. Graham's future ministry. This unique perspective on Billy's ministry should make us all aware of the potential of our impact on others and the debt we owe to those who have formatively empowered our journey. Igniting the Fire is particularly motivational to me as a college president. This book will stand tall among the many others that have sought to find the key as to why the Graham story is so amazing. I give it five stars!"
--Joseph M. Stowell, President, Cornerstone University, Grand Rapids, Michigan

"Billy Graham rose from the humblest of beginnings to become during the second half of the twentieth century one of the world's most recognized and respected figures. His evangelistic messages reached a larger audience than any in history. How could it happen? Jake Hanson's Igniting the Fire offers an intimate look at the unlikely origins of this extraordinary man, and the still more extraordinary ministry God granted him."
--Dr. Duane Litfin, President Emeritus Wheaton College

Author/Artist Review

Author: Jake Hanson
Located in: Birmingham, Alabama
Submitted: October 20, 2014

Tell us a little about yourself.  I am a lover of biography, the history of evangelicalism and of evangelism. I have three beautiful girls with my wife and live in Birmingham, Alabama.

What was your motivation behind this project?  I started this project as an exploration into Billy Graham, and how he became a great evangelist. At first, I wanted to encourage a new generation of evangelists, but then my motivation grew. In Graham's life, I began to see that there were dozens and dozens of regular, but dedicated Christian believers who shaped and formed this young evangelist. It gave me hope that all of us have a part to play in evangelism--not just the evangelists.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  I hope that Igniting the Fire stirs up a passion for evangelism for this generation. It is my prayer that some will read this and will begin to evaluate how they might be a part of what God is doing to make His gospel known throughout the earth.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  From the time I began working on this project over ten years ago, many tears have been shed, prayers offered, commitments made. The book has changed my life. I met such wonderful people on this journey and I am grateful that I can share just a bit of what I have gained.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  Christian biographer Lyle Dorsett was the one who first encouraged me to take my love of biography to become a writer of biography. In addition to him, I have enjoyed David McCasland's biographies, David McCullough's histories of America, and I have generally been shaped by the history of American evangelicalism.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  I am now working on a biography of John Wesley, another one of my (complicated) heroes.
