Tell us a little about yourself. I am a lover of biography, the history of evangelicalism and of evangelism. I have three beautiful girls with my wife and live in Birmingham, Alabama.
What was your motivation behind this project? I started this project as an exploration into Billy Graham, and how he became a great evangelist. At first, I wanted to encourage a new generation of evangelists, but then my motivation grew. In Graham's life, I began to see that there were dozens and dozens of regular, but dedicated Christian believers who shaped and formed this young evangelist. It gave me hope that all of us have a part to play in evangelism--not just the evangelists.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? I hope that Igniting the Fire stirs up a passion for evangelism for this generation. It is my prayer that some will read this and will begin to evaluate how they might be a part of what God is doing to make His gospel known throughout the earth.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? From the time I began working on this project over ten years ago, many tears have been shed, prayers offered, commitments made. The book has changed my life. I met such wonderful people on this journey and I am grateful that I can share just a bit of what I have gained.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? Christian biographer Lyle Dorsett was the one who first encouraged me to take my love of biography to become a writer of biography. In addition to him, I have enjoyed David McCasland's biographies, David McCullough's histories of America, and I have generally been shaped by the history of American evangelicalism.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: I am now working on a biography of John Wesley, another one of my (complicated) heroes.
