Tell us a little about yourself. Ellie Klipp is a retired elementary school teacher who has loved and learned from a lot of little kids.
She earned her B.A. from Biola and received an M.A. from MIUD (Masters International University of Divinity) in February, 2017.
Ellie loves junktique decorating and tree planting. She and her husband enjoy country life near their grandchildren in the southwest. Sometimes Ellie's students giggle and call her "Mrs. Paperclip."
What was your motivation behind this project? Are young children aware of all the transgender buzz in the media these days? We know that little kids are absorbing the world around them like sponges. But how can Christian parents talk to very young children about gender? I was "spouting" to my husband one day, complaining that SOMEone should do something for the little kids when I felt God chide me, "Someone?" It seems in addition to forgetting the Biblical model, people use cultural stereotypes like "boys don't play with dolls" to confuse the issue of gender. I wrote this little book to help parents and encourage children to celebrate being a boy or a girl by God's choice.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? Parents and grandparents, teachers and friends can use this little book to help young children internalize the truth that God made them just the way they are, including as a boy or as a girl. The book presents this message in a way that is simple, affirming and free of stereotypes. This book gives positive encouragement for a Biblical and scientific understanding of gender.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? I was ready to play on our ranch and suddenly I am in the midst of interviews, book carnivals, and conversations that I never envisioned. This was not my choice. When I felt God nudging me to write this book, I planned to write it and go back to my private life. But God apparently had other plans because He made me realize that this little book can only be a help if people know about it. God certainly leads in mysterious ways, because now this shy grandma is giving radio interviews. This is HIS work, His truth, and these are His kids!
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? Please note that I am just a retired school teacher and a grandma, but the back cover of the book features endorsements of I DON'T HAVE TO CHOOSE by a prominent Christian psychologist, a medical doctor, a university biology professor, an educator, a senior pastor, an orthodox rabbi, and a grandfather of sixteen children.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: Beside the book on the I DON'T HAVE TO CHOOSE page would you please print: "The humor and warm-hearted wisdom in this fun-to-read little book helps children to internalize the truth that God made them just the way they are, including as a boy or a girl, in a way that is simple, affirming, and free of stereotypes."
