The Consulting WriterAge: 35-44Gender: Female5 Stars Out Of 5Encouraging and uplifting bookMarch 20, 2018The Consulting WriterAge: 35-44Gender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Bart Millard, the lead vocal of MercyMe, opens up in an intimate revealing of life in an abusive home. He's honest about his thoughts and feelings from then, how he would have been relieved if his father had passed away. How music and creative play were his escapes. Some might ask, "Did Got allow for Bart to be abused so he'd end up starting MercyMe?" I believe God can uses unfortunate circumstances for good.
"He never drank or did drugs. He didn't need any help to fuel the rage."
This surprised me. I'd always figured his rage and abuse was due to being an alcoholic. I guess even bitterness and regret can be just as much of a fuel as substances.
"Thank the Lord for the prayers and provision of grandmas!"
This is a phrase I've heard from my own mother. She's noted more than once that it was the influence and fervent prayers of her grandmother that saved her and drew her to a life in Christ. That doesn't mean she didn't have moments of straying far from Him, but ultimately, circumstances led her back and she's been serving him ever since. So when I saw that sentence from Bart that said, "Thank the Lord for the prayers and provision of grandmas" I immediately thought not only of my mom's testimony but also how she's helped guide and prayer for my kids as well. In fact, she's even praying fortheir kids in the future.
"While I'm here on Earth, I amboth a work in progress and already made whole because of the cross."
Over half of the book focuses on Bart's life growing up with an abusive father and the eventual change that took place which provided much-needed emotional healing. The last part of the book is about the start of MercyMe, the inspiration of the song, I Can Only Imagine, and Bart's relationship with Shannon, all of which he could now see how God used certaincircumstances in his life to lead him to where he was meant to be. Bart includes an appendix of 75 verses given to him by his youth pastor, Rusty Kennedy, one who was important in his walk with Christ. And now, he offers those same verses he carries close to his heart to the reader. This was an excellent read and intimate look into Bart's life, his struggles with growing up in an abusive home, the eventual healing that took place when his dad turned to Christ, and ultimately his trust in God through his life. Not just for MercyMe fans, this book is an important read for those that have struggled with bitterness and regret, anyone who's experienced verbal or physical abuse. It's a really encouraging and uplifting book with a little humor sprinkled here and here. I received a complimentary copy in exchange for my honest opinion. And personally, I really enjoyed reading it!
BeccaRae5 Stars Out Of 5Powerful Story of RedemptionMarch 11, 2018BeccaRaeQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5You don't have to be a Christian to have heard of the song "I Can Only Imagine," sung by the group MercyMe. Back in the early 2000's it was a quick hit in both the Christian and secular music worlds. Almost 20 years later the song isstill well known to the world. But what's the storybehind the song? Speaking as someone who isvery emotionally effected by music, I (along with many others), will take a song I'm hearing and find a way to personalize it and give it meaning for myself. For Bart (along with other artists), his music is a way for expressing the deepest parts of his life with the world. As fellow artist Amy Grant told him "Bart, you didn't write this song in ten minutes. It took a lifetime." (pg 146). Bart's childhood was no fairy-tale to say the least. His parents divorced when he was young and his mother quickly remarried. For a time he and his older brother Stephen were bounced back-and-forth between their parents until their mother divorced again and moved away with another new husband. At that point the boys lived with their dad and only saw their mom a few times a year. Their father was a football star back in his days, but was bitter over losing his chances at "making it big." He also suffered a head injury that many believed altered his ability to control his temper. Bart shares that his early days were full of many spankings that lead to whippings and beatings. His father's temper terrified him. Never did Bart think that he could have a "normal" or even "good" relationship with his father, until his father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and the LORD slowly started to change his heart.
While there are a lot of movies "based on the book," this book is very clearly "based on the movie." Bart talks about the actors chosen to play both himself and his family in the film. He talks about how difficult it was to fit his entire life in a 2-hour time-slot. This book was written to fill in some of the gaps that the movie didn't have the time to fill. It gave him the chance to talk more freely from a personal perspective instead of only seeing what happens on a screen.
I am always an advocate to "read the book before watching the movie," and I continue that stance now. There is so much more that you can get out of a book than you can in a movie (Which is why Bart says he decided to write the book). It's intended to go along with the movie and therefore I recommend both together (I have not yet seen the movie but plan on it).
cheryl5 Stars Out Of 5Gods Grace and LoveFebruary 23, 2018cherylQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5The first time I heard I Can Only Imagine was when I accept Jesus into my heart and always imagined how I could be the hands and feet of Jesus. Now I know!!!! Share Jesus with anyone and everyone! Bart Millards story is inspiring, shows how Gods grace and love surpasses everything. I Can Only Imagine written by Bart Millard is the story behind the song and his life. We serve a mighty God, He transformed Barts dad and He can and will transform you if you allow Him to. I cried, I heard God speaking to me through the words of Barts story. Once you accept Jesus into your heart, your life is transformed and you will never be the same. Jesus loves us so much that He died for us. Bart gets right to the truth, his story is a must read.
I received an ARC from the publisher. My opinions are my own.
Madalyn5 Stars Out Of 5A Great Book That Set My Heart To SingingFebruary 14, 2018MadalynQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I Can Only Imagine
An amazing book. Bart Millard's Memoir has so much information about the life behind I Can Only Imagine. Actually tells the story of the God of Bart Millard and his working through his life to bring him to the man he is today. A very inspirational book. I liked the way the book was divided into ten chapters, each of the ten chapters plus the introduction and the conclusion were named for one of Mercy Me's songs. Each had a few lines of the songs included. An amazing story of God at work in the lives of Bart and his family and Mercy Me. I'm so glad I read the book before I saw the movie.

This was so amazing! A lifetime of living to get this song. I know he said 10 minutes but it was his life. Life of abuse and a story of forgiveness. By the grace of God, Bart is who is today. A life changed through God and music. Please read the book it is so much detailed of his life . The movie will be coming out in March but to me only so much can go into the time frame of a movie. I plan on doing both. Is there room for second chances in life? Yes I believe there are. Well written!!
