Inkwell Reviews3 Stars Out Of 5Review from inkwellreviews.comJanuary 2, 2017Inkwell ReviewsQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 3I dont know about you, but sometimes I get tired of the same old historical/romance and suspense and intrigue books. It always seemed like there was nothing more out there for a reader like me. I wanted something different, intriguing. Then I came across Melanie Dickerson, who writes in the medieval time period, her books are usually based on a fairy tale. This concept got my attention and therefore I thought I would give it a try. From the start I was enthralled. Like I said, it was so fresh. I had never read anything like it before. Her characters were also very realistic. Writing in the medieval time, I presume, is hard to do, yet she did it exceptionally. Her writing. The only way I know how to describe it is flowing. The whole book just flowed. No lack of knowledge of what was going on, no boring parts, etc. Like fairy tales, some of the stories are predictable, examples being Snow White and Sleeping Beauty. This is not bad at all, it will leave you with warm fuzzies.
This one was based loosely on Swan Lake and Robin Hood. For me, Robin Hood is one my favorite fairy tales, so maybe thats why I like it so much. If you want something that is fresh and new from your daily book routine, I think you should give it a try. I added one of Melanie Dickerson books to my rotation, keeping it new and fresh.

Both Odette and Jorgen had very difficult childhoods after they were each orphaned. But they have both risen above those days. Their hearts and characters were developed through those trials.
I thoroughly enjoyed how Melanie combined aspects from both Swan Lake and Robin Hood in this charming and original story. It is a very entertaining book. It was very interesting for me to try and figure out which of the characters turned out to be the evil person (or people) that were trying to destroy their lives.
BookwormMama14Age: 25-34Gender: Female4 Stars Out Of 5An amazing adventure!November 25, 2015BookwormMama14Age: 25-34Gender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Danger and romance lie deep in the heart of Thornbeck Forest. Where a poacher's only desire is to feed the poor. The forester determined to catch the poacher. And a margrave who holds the future of all in his hands.
"Because love was the best reason of all!"
Odette Menkels has a burning desire to help the orphans of Thornbeck. And the forest at her doorstep has an abundance of wild game. The only problem is that the game belongs to the king. Nevertheless, Odette braves the wrath of the margrave who is responsible for the Thornbeck forest. Every night she disguises herself, hunts the deer and feeds the poor. Her life is changed in an instant when she meets Jorgen Hartman, the forester, at the Midsummer festival. Jorgen has found evidence of a poacher and would like nothing better than to bring this poacher to justice. What will he do if he finds out that Odette is the poacher? Will Odette have everything stripped from her? There will be many confessions and consequences, but not all are bad...and some may even surprise you!
This is the first book I have read by Melanie Dickerson, but it won't be the last! I already have The Golden Braid on my list to read by the end of the year. I believe that writing medieval fairy tales for adults was a stroke of genius! The thrill of the chase. The excitement of the hunt. Balls and finery, sorrow and hunger, the desire to do good and the consequences of the laws of the land. The tragic circumstances of the day were portrayed very well. Life in 1363 was rough! But we are reminded that the bonds of love and family are not to be trifled with. Enter the forest of Thornbeck and be whisked through an incredible journey.
MauriKansasAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5A lovely "Robin Hood"July 21, 2015MauriKansasAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Odette Menkels knows it is wrong to poach deer from the margrave's hunting grounds, but she rationalizes it must be done to feed the poor children in her town. If she doesn't give them venison, they will go hungry. Her uncle, who is her guardian, supports this idea. At the Midsummer festival, Odette meets Jorgen Hartman, the handsome new forester. Things become a bit trickier as she learns he has discovered poaching, but, of course, he has no idea that the lovely young woman he is drawn to is the poacher he seeks. Odette also very much enjoys Jorgen's company but knows she can't really consider him as a potential husband since he is just a lowly forester and she is of a higher class. There is a wealthy young man, Mathis Papendorp, the Burgomeister's oldest son, who will stop at almost nothing to make Odette is wife. There are quite a few twists and turns in this story as secrets are revealed. There is plenty of adventure and a sweet romance that comes to a very satisfactory conclusion.
There are many authors who I consider "must read" but Melanie Dickerson is a "must buy" author for me. She takes an old fairy tale and puts a new spin on it that makes it even more enchanting. I'm looking forward to the next book in this series; I believe the margrave needs a good wife. It will be interesting to find out who the author has in mind for this stern, yet kind, man.
Rebecca ManeyGastonia, North CarolinaAge: 55-65Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Medieval Tale of Stealth and Romance!June 27, 2015Rebecca ManeyGastonia, North CarolinaAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Odette Menkels sleeps by day and hunts by night; determined to use her extraordinary skills to feed the poor and orphaned children of Thornbeck. Following a chance meeting with the margrave's new young forester, Jorgen Hartman, Odette becomes grossly conflicted about continuing to poach the king's deer population, especially after learning that Jorgen has found evidence of a poacher and has sworn to locate and bring to justice those who are responsible. But Odette's uncle, her guardian since the childhood death of her parents, is curiously dependent on Odette's after hours occupation, and he insists that she marry the rich son of the mayor, Mathis, in order to ensure that the impoverished children, whom Odette adores, will continue to have food, long after Odette's poaching days are over. There is only one problem, Odette's heart has already attached itself to another.
It is obvious early on in this story that Odette's secrets and Jorgen's honesty will reach a climax; thus transforming a simply good story into a page turner. Enjoy every minute of "The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest"!
