Author/Artist Review

Tell us a little about yourself.  Rev. Dennis Barta has pastored in five churches since graduating from Fort Wayne Bible College and Asbury Theological Seminary . He was ordained as a minister in The Christian and Missionary Alliance in 1976. He currently serves on staff as a pastor at Grace Church in Cleveland, Ohio, a church approaching 4,000 in weekend attendance. Education and discipleship have been an integral part of each of Rev. Barta¬ís ministries. While his primary ministry has always been in the local church, he has also served as a leader in Christian Education ministries at both the district and national levels. In addition, he developed and conducted The Heart of the Teacher Workshop, which has been conducted in churches around the country and overseas. He is a contributing writer for the book Knowing Jesus, which was recently updated and republished. He is the primary writer of Big Ideas, a curriculum that communicates the core values of The C&MA in a way that children understand.
Rev. Barta is married to Marsha and together they have three adult daughters, a son-on-law and three grandchildren. His interests include woodworking, lighthouses and photography.

What was your motivation behind this project?  While the Children's Pastor at Grace Church I wanted communion to be understood by 3rd - 6th grade children in such a way that they would be fully impacted by the experience of this vital ordinance. Too often I saw children taking the bread and cup in a lighthearted way and felt that they did not fully grasp its significance. After failing to find a biblical, contemporary and engaging resource to prepare kids for communion, I decided to write one myself. Originally Hungry for More? was intended for the children at Grace Church; now the book is being used by children in many churches in a variety of denominations.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  My purpose is to give parents and children's leaders tools to prepare children in upper elementary and middle school for one of the most meaningful experiences on their spiritual journey -- communion. Hungry for More? empowers parents and leaders to disciple kids to more fully experience the grace and power of God in communion.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  I was personally challenged by having to carefully think through every aspect of communion from a child's viewpoint. This led me to more fully appreciate both the significance and simplicity of communion.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  I had used the Communion book by Richard Todd for many years until it become dated and too juvenile for the age children I saw as prime to begin thinking about communion -- nine and ten year olds. So I wrote Hungry for More? to reach a new generation in a strongly biblical, engaging and culturally relevant way.
