Publisher's Description

A True Story of Homosexuality, Hope and Redemption

Homosexuality, prostitution, pornography, cults--secret sins rival the glitter of Hollywood for young actor David Kyle Foster. Winning wholesome television roles, his star on the rise, he is relieved to be free from his father's harshness. But the desperate loneliness and sexual obsession that characterized his youth now accompany his rise to success--and bondage to a double life seems the only answer. Can Jesus' love reach one so broken?

Whether you're grappling with your own darkness or know someone who is, this gripping and inspiring memoir shows you that, no matter how bleak it may seem, there is always hope: God can heal and restore the soul that hungers for love.

I'm not usually lost for words; indeed I tend to have too many but this book has me confused about how I feel about it. Perhaps my confusion comes from the fact that I'm the church librarian and am always thinking, "Is this a book I should put in the library?" To be sure, "Love Hunger" by David Kyle Foster is one that many will find both offensive at the same time as many will find it encouraging and helpful. I guess I found it to be both.

The irony is that if his life story were fiction, I wouldn't read it - too graphic. However, this is real life and there are so many people, more than we know, who need sexual healing - healing that is impossible apart from the mercy of God. If I can be so honest, I've never heard anyone be successful in leaving a life of homosexuality so it was a great encouragement to me to be reminded that God is bigger than any sin. I also found Mr. Foster's drive towards serving His Lord encouraging as well. We need to be fired up; we need to pray and ask God to give us hearts that passionately yearn for him.

I would recommend this book with one caveat: some may find the chapters on Mr. Foster's prostitution years too graphic. In my opinion they were done as tastefully as possible but given the nature of the topic, you'll want to use discretion.

BTW, I was given a copy of this book free in exchange for an honest review.

Love Hunger by David Kyle Foster is a book based on the author's experiences of growing up. David grew up in a family where he was one of the middle children in a pastor's family. David grew up attending church multiple times per week in a family of 4 boys where discipline was quick practicing, "spare the rod and spoil the child". He came from a line of pastor's families as his father's father was also a Presbyterian pastor as was his father since arriving in America from Ireland in the early 1800s. David grew up in the 60s and so when he went to college he grew his hair long and dabbled in drugs as well as alcohol like many of his cohorts. He also started experimenting with sex both homosexual as well a heterosexual. David headed out to California to seek his fortune in acting and managed to find work in commercials, teen magazines, and a few movies. He continued to use drugs and broadened his sexual appetite to include many partners and paying customers. David continued in this vein though he felt increasing guilt as well as feeling like he was headed for hell. This book follows David's experiences from sexual and drug addiction into a life of being a pastor freed from all of these addictions. David is very honest with the things he did during this period of his life though it is not particularly graphic is detail unless necessary.

This book was a difficult read for me and in the middle I almost put it down and didn't think that I would finish it. Though as I stated in the previous paragraph the descriptions are not extremely graphic and I also lived through the 60s, I found the homosexual nature to be difficult and uncomfortable to read. I am glad that I made it through since the end of the book is easy to read and I am glad that David found his way through and is now living a life in which he is happy and he also reconciled with his parents before their eventual deaths. The book does not sugar coat either the life he lived before becoming reconciled with Christ or after. I would recommend this book only to those seeking to change their life from sexual addiction or homosexuality or their parents. It is a difficult read and one not for the faint of heart.

I received this book from Chosen which is a division of Baker Publishing Group for this review.

Love Hunger by David Kyle Foster is an inspiring story of a man's journey from despair to hope. Foster shares with us that when you are not in a relationship with God you can become lost and the exposure to the sins of life will take hold. His journey shows us that anyone can go from dark to light as long as they are willing to have an intimate relationship with God because He will love you, guide you, and reward you. Not only will this new relationship be inspiring, but it will heal in ways that cannot be created in any other way except with/through Him. This memoir was nothing like I thought it would be and I am happy to have had the opportunity to read such an amazing journey. I was given a review copy from Chosen Books and all opinions are my own.

"Love Hunger: A Harrowing Journey from Sexual Addiction to True Fulfillment" is easily the most honest autobiography I've ever read, and it's probably one of the most inspiring as well. I literally could not put this book down until I finished it. David Foster successfully balances being open without being explicit as he recounts for his readers a childhood filled with self-hate and despair, his eventual foray into homosexuality, male prostitution and drug addiction in his early twenties, his semi-successful quest for fame and recognition in Hollywood, and his stint as a cult follower of Guru Maharaj Ji. Foster is a gifted and intelligent writer, able to tell his story in a way that is both humble and enthralling. The turning point in his life is clear and points directly to the relentless love of Christ, the power of the Holy Spirit and the intercessory prayers of others as the catalysts that led to his freedom from sexual bondage, addiction, anger and unforgiveness. David's faith and his passion for the Lord is infectious- as gripping as the story of his depravation is, even more so is the story of his redemption and his continuing walk of faith. I think that's one of the things I loved about this book; David's life didn't suddenly become boring, easy or predictable when he gave his life to Jesus and he's as honest about that as he is about his past. Neither does his writing style suddenly become dull, cliché or sanctimonious as he describes the story of his new life in Christ. David's testimony of the transforming power of God's love and His unlimited grace is powerful and convincing and it will challenge, inspire and encourage you, whatever your own story may be.

I received a complimentary copy of this book for review from Chosen Books. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255.
