Product Description

When the Kings move to a new home in a new town, the house seems odd at first; but things get really strange when they realize that some rooms are portals to other worlds. The Kings face terrifying dangers within the rooms of their home, but it still seems like an adventure until people start coming out of the rooms and into the house. When one of the intruders kidnaps their mother, they must find a way to rescue her-but who would believe such a fantastical story?

Publisher's Description

Dream house . . . or bad dream?

When the Kings move from L.A. to a secluded small town, fifteen-year-old Xander is beyond disappointed. He and his friends loved to create amateur films . . . but the tiny town of Pinedale is the last place a movie buff and future filmmaker wants to land.

But he, David, and Toria are captivated by the many rooms in the old Victorian fixer-upper they moved into--as well as the heavy woods surrounding the house.

They soon discover there's something odd about the house. Sounds come from the wrong directions. Prints of giant, bare feet appear in the dust. And when David tries to hide in the linen closet, he winds up in locker 119 at his new school.

Then the really weird stuff kicks in: they find a hidden hallway with portals leading off to far-off places--in long-ago times. Xander is starting to wonder if this kind of travel is a teen's dream come true . . . or his worst nightmare.

I bought this book for my 12 year old daughter, and was disappointed when I flipped through the pages. I noticed that the author used repeated references to R-rated movies and did not find that to be appropriate for a book directed at kids/teens. My daughter has not seen Misery, The Shining, Aliens, or Collateral Damage. Those were the references I saw just from flipping through. Could be more. The author uses characters from these movies to describe things in this book assuming kids have seen them. Returned this book for something better.

I read this book because the mention of time travel in the description intrigued me. Unfortunately, this element doesn't show up until 2/3 through the book, and even then, it's not very extensive.

I also really didn't like the portrayal of gender in this book. The male characters get to go on adventures and try to save the day, but the female characters are always damsels in distress who are purposefully kept out of the loop.

Yet, it's great in the chiller-thriller department. Most tween and teen boys would probably enjoy this book a lot more than I did.

This was a surprisingly good read, with interesting twists, but the ending really *got* me. ARRGGGHHHH!
