This is a delightful book! This is the first in the series of Backyard Horses. Ellie James is a fourth grader with a big imagination. She wants to own a black stallion so bad and dreams about this all the time. Ellie has a little adventure about her imaginary horse. I would recommend this book especially to young girls. Dandi Daley Mackall is a very good children's writer.
Horse Dreams is such a cutie story. This is the first book of a series. I can tell you that my daughter and I will have to continue the series. In this book, you are introduced to Ellie, a young girl who is wishing for a black stallion show horse. Then she comes across a poor horse in need of rescuing. I thought this was a beautiful little story about the true meaning of love. 5 stars.
I read this book with my younger sister in mind, overall i enjoyed this book and i really like this author. I didn't find anything wrong or bad in the story line, one girl is a bit snotty but nothing terrible. There is no violence or language at all, completely clean. This book is aimed a bit more to younger audiences but is still enjoyable to older.
The book is an easy read, perfect for elementary school age children - especially if they love horses.
I loved the fact that the main character's little brother was deaf and that signing was a natural part of the story. I think that too often literature forgets about the deaf, blind, and other handicapped individuals who still live ... and this is even more true in a children's book. I think it's important to instill that these individuals are normal people too at a young age, and this book does that beautifully and naturally.
I also liked that while the heroine isn't perfect, this isn't one of those books where she disobeys and everything still turns out right in the end. Also, this book teaches that sometimes God does answer our prayers, but in a different-than-expected way - another important lesson for children.
I don't care for most children's lit (even "Christian" books), but I enjoyed this one and recommend it.
