In Horse Dreams (Backyard Horses series), Dandi Daley Mackall takes on the classic young girls' story of wanting a fancy show horse, but she gives it a little twist. Mackall's heroine, Ellie James, dreams of owning a stallion show horse and decides she's going to pray for several weeks about it to see if God will answer her prayers. By doing so, Ellie has opened the door for fears, frustrations, and good lessons in patience.

Horse Dreams is a short book that is easy to read, with short chapters that move the action along at a nice trot. Within the pages, the key characters interact realistically, although there are some clichéd personages, ranging from "that annoying teacher" to "that mean girl." Everything climaxes at the moment that Ellie goes to check on the pinto horse at the local animal shelter, and she realizes that this is the horse she’s been praying for all along.

Ellie James is a daydreaming fourth grader who's stubborn and enthusiastic. Her actions throughout the story are that of any normal horse-crazy fourth grade girl, and her belief in herself is stronger than probably most girls her age. The other characters in the book either nicely compliment Ellie, such as her parents and her friend Colt, or completely clash, such as her female adversary Larissa.

Dandi Daley Mackall has once again aimed at the classic young girl story and has hit the target. The book is nicely paced, attention grabbing, and very often entertaining and funny. This novel would be great for girls between third and fifth grades because the main character is a fourth grader, the book is short, and the words are easy to read. Horse Dreams would make a great addition to any classroom or personal children’s library. – Demelza Ramierz, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com

Typical Ellie: "I dream horses. I don't just dream about horses. I dream up horses so real I can smell horse. Horse is the best scent in the whole world. They could put that stuff into perfume and make a fortune."

4-th grader Ellie James dreams of and prays about having her own horse. But not just any horse. She dreams of a black stallion with which she'll surely win the Hamilton Royal Horse Show. So when a scrawny pinto comes into her life, she helps it, but doesn't think much about it. But can it be that God has more in store for her than she has ever dreamed?

I found this to be a fun quick read. Through the story, Ellie learns that God's plans aren't ours and that sometimes prayers get answered in a way we did not expect.

I recommend Horse Dreams to Christian kids and tweens who love horses.

What makes this book so great is that Horse Dreams is written from the Child's point of view. 4th grader Ellie James is a likable character and sure to get your girls wanting to read the whole series.

What little girl (me included) hasn't dreamed of having a horse all her own. My girls dreams are constant since their cousin has 2 horses of her own. So my girls could very well have been the character Ellie. Ellie begs, cries and prays for a horse all her own. She also understands that sometimes prayers can go unanswered till God feels the time is right and we are ready for the prayers to be answered.

Overall this is a fun series for girls who love horses and I plan to be on the look out for more Horse Dreams books.

I vaguely remember reading this book when I was in the age range of the intended audience (probably about 8 to 12 years old). It is a pretty cute story.

Im not sure why, but most children seem to love horse stories. I know I did when I was younger. I think many young readers can identify with a young girl spending time daydreaming about a horse of their very own. I think they can sympathize with a girl getting into trouble for daydreaming instead of focusing on schoolwork, or other things.

Aside from the the horse story, this book offers readers lessons in life. For example, we can dream of and pray for a certain thing, but sometimes Gods answer is different from what we imagined. We can learn from Ellies story that although sometimes Gods answer isnt quite what we pictured, it is even better.

I love the sign language at the beginning of each chapter and the way that Mackall pulls in other issues facing children into her books, for example a sibling with a hearing impairment. Readers in similar circumstances will enjoy reading about characters like themselves and readers who are not in similar circumstances can learn about what it might be like with a sibling with special needs.

This is a great series for kids, filled with interesting story lines, characters they can identify with, and messages they can learn from. Parents can enjoy the fact their children are reading a book with a positive message and learning that even though Gods answer might be different from what we imagined, he always answers prayers.

Great story to teach kids about going for your dreams and praying for those dreams. Although we may not always get the answer we want from our prayers it is important to pray that God will show the path to what we want or need. Wonderfully written story for children who love animals.
