The Wife5 Stars Out Of 5Horizon Phonics and reading book 1December 15, 2016The WifeQuality: 4Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I have been using this product for about a year and it is one of my favorites. It is advanced for kindergarten and I am okay with that. I am actually using k for my 1st grader who just turned 7 and my Kinder 5. My oldest has had trouble with letter recognition due to poor eyesight. We are working on correcting it. The size of the print in these books is great for her and they seem to enjoy the colored pictures. The math program is really my favorite but I will be keeping with both. I tried all about spelling , math you see and abeka. I prefer horizon. I just ordered used copies of the teachers manuals because some of the pictures are hard to recognize what they are representing and for the tests. It's taking us awhile to get through these books but I supplement other stuff as well. We are currently using teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons and have put horizons phonics and reading to the side until we finish it.

We are using the same for our other children.
ShoppingqueenWashington StateAge: 35-44Gender: female2 Stars Out Of 5Not developmentally appropriate for ave. kinderJuly 23, 2014ShoppingqueenWashington StateAge: 35-44Gender: femaleFirst the positives: Lots here, perhaps enough for two years of instruction for the average 5-6 year old. Kindergarten program moves quickly through phonics concepts so a plus for an advanced child or one that is catching on quickly. Includes made up words for those are already sight reading but need decoding practice. Good practice for following instructions, instructions must be read by teacher/parent.
Not so positives: The lines where children write responses are too small for beginning writers. The amount of daily work is excessive for beginning writers and readers. (Usually two pages front and back) The first word of the first story is "This". Not a great way to boost confidence in beginning readers. Concepts like writing sentences with quotation marks and plural possessives are taught. The teacher's manual is needed to figure out many of the pictures. No assessments but review pages can be used to assess retention.
Mama23Ontario, CanadaAge: 25-34Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Very advanced, but do-able.March 15, 2012Mama23Ontario, CanadaAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 3Meets Expectations: 5My 4yr old daughter was struggling with letter recognition until we started this book. She loves the colourful images, and the spiral effect has made it easy for her to remember previous lessons. My 5yr old son has been working through this series as well and loves reading! A word of warning- they are extremely advanced for a kindergarten level.
Stephanie5 Stars Out Of 5October 6, 2009StephanieThis curriculum is great. My child loves it and does very well with it. I am at the beginning of the book and my child is already beginning to read. I highly recommend it.
