Savvy5 Stars Out Of 5Excellent courseMay 31, 2017SavvyQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0I used Horizons with my daughter from first grade on and loved it so much that I continued with Horizons with pre-algebra and will be doing Horizons algebra with her as well. My daughter has always scored well in standardized math tests -- and I credit Horizons for giving her the thorough foundation and confidence in math. I prefer Horizons to courses like Teaching Textbooks because I enjoy working with my kids directly on math. I find the personal attention to be helpful for them and for me.
This course was challenging, but my daughter was able to succeed because Horizons does a good job in this course of building on concepts and returning to the concepts throughout the year so that by the end of the course, my daughter had a thorough foundation and is solidly prepared for algebra. This course definitely requires work with your child. Occasionally we looked up online videos to help explain concepts. We also had to use a scientific calculator this year (we used an online app calculator -- which worked beautifully).
I would recommend staying on top of the lessons in order to thoroughly cover this course for your child; unlike in prior levels of Horizons, you need to be closely involved in the lessons because many new concepts are introduced in this course and should be understood before continuing on. My daughter and I would review the lessons together regularly to be sure she had a good grasp of the concepts. The work is definitely worth the effort. We both loved this course! I consider it a successful, excellent math course when, after a challenging year, your seventh grader ends the year loving math and feeling confident about the upcoming year in math.
When buying the other books, be sure to buy not only the pre-algebra book for your student but also the pre-algebra tests and resources book, as the pre-algebra book does not have the tests like the Horizons books in lower levels do.
