If you're new to homeschooling or just starting out with Horizons will need to go back and do the preschool level first in order to be on level with these books.
We wound up using LifePac Kindergarten Language Arts which is more on grade level for a 5 year old. These are also on the same level as Abeka's K4 phonics program.

Switching to homeschooling with this curriculum has improved his letter recognition and phonetics. It appears to be a higher level, advanced curriculum, but we are taking it slow anyway.
HFrancis5 Stars Out Of 5Horizons Phonics and Reading KindergartenNovember 16, 2016HFrancisQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5We got this curriculum for our new K5 5 year old. She does great with the program. At first it was a bit of a struggle because the lessons are a bit long and writing intensive. Around lesson 20 she started to really like the lessons. Yes, it took a little while however, it has paid off! She reads better than most K5 students and she is able to decode a word that she doesn't know. She did go into this knowing her alphabet and sounds and how to form all the letters. I really love this program because she loves it. Are there more "fun" programs out there....yes however, I have a child that is pretty serious when it comes to school work and this challenges her just enough to keep her interest but not enough to discourage her. This is a VERY teacher intensive curriculum. If you are looking for something with little interaction from the teacher this is NOT the curriculum for you. Thus far it is great for our family!
pianofingers86191 Stars Out Of 5horrible curriculm for beginnersJanuary 9, 2015pianofingers8619This is an awful curriculm for beginners who came into kindergarten not knowing letter sounds or blends. I just started in Jan with my 5 year old this curriculm after laying a good foundation of letter sounds and blends in Sept-dec. She still struggles! And most of the seat work is 3 pages front and back...it takes over an hour to do this work with her and she gets so frustrated she can not get it. I would never recommend this highly challenging curriculm to a mother of a 5 year old. I also asked my mom who has been a teacher for 30+ years and she says that this at 1st grade level work or harder.
