The 1st Century Church Speaks to the 21st Century Church

The church in Thessalonica was a congregation of new believers that was impacting their world for Jesus, but their awe-inspiring love for Christ came at a terrible price. They endured tremendous trials and tribulations, to the point that many gave their lives for the gospel.

Paul wrote 1 Thessalonians to further equip these young believers to live as beacons of light in an immoral city. he instructed them to go beyond their efforts in living for Christ and sought to clarify their understanding of the Rapture.

After his first letter, rumors began to circulate throughout the church in Thessalonica that the Rapture had already taken place. Paul wrote 2 Thessalonians to dispel these rumors and no further encourage them to stand firm in Christ.

This commentary speaks to the 21st century Christian. With the persecution of believers on the rise, sexual immorality running rampant, and the abundance of End Time prophecies, Dr. Couch's commentary will help the reader understand how to stand for Christ in a fallen world and find hope in Christ's return.

Editorial Reviews

The Thessalonians epistles are in many ways a primer to doctrine, and especially prophecy, written by Paul to a congregation of young Christians. Considering the letter's destination, it is an amazing revelation of many doctrines in answer to their questions. Prominent in the book is the doctrine of prophecy and that of the Rapture. This commentary is accurate, scholarly, understandable, and comprehensive.

It is rare to find a detailed, expository commentary on 1 and 2 Thessalonians from a traditional dispensational perspective. Mal Couch and Ed Hindson have done a service in presenting Paul's two letters to the Thessalonians so that pastors, Bible teachers, and thoughtful Christians can more easily grasp and apply their valuable truth.

1 & 2 Thessalonians are THE letters to study, if you want to understand the return of Jesus Christ, from the inspired Apostle Paul's own pen.

REVIEW: Dr. Mal Couch's commentary coverage is phrase by phrase and fairly exhaustive, longer than a study Bible or 1 volume commentary on the whole Bible. For example has pages of commentary, including a list of all the Biblical temples. He expounds the original Greek, compares Revelation verses and discusses multiple viewpoints. Couch interprets the Thessalonian letters literally and grammatically, comparing parallel passages throughout the Bible. This commentary uses the NASB translation and the Alexandrian critical text of the Greek NT. Features include chapter questions and a glossary with prophecy terms. Couch's "Dictionary of Premillennial Theology" is also excellent for prophecy students.

STATS: This is modern glued hardback with the dust jacket info printed right on the glossy cover, very handsome. Actual size is x x ". It has medium size, readable print with some bolding and nice formatting. Couch's book has a copyright date of 2001 with 279 pages total. The actual commentary with questions is 206 pages. The Theological Glossary is 7 pages.
