Author/Artist Review

Tell us a little about yourself.  My name is Carrie Strong. I am an experienced, but imperfect, homeschooling mom of three children - with another one on the way. I had the opportunity to spend two years after college in the Dominican Republic teaching French, music, art, and BIble during my first year, and second-grade during my second year. After returning to the states, I taught K-12 Spanish at an academy in Kalamazoo, MI before getting married and having kids of my own. My family and I now reside in northern Michigan where I enjoy teaching my children, writing books, blogging, being outdoors, singing, and hobby farming.

What was your motivation behind this project?  I originally began writing this book to provide my sister, who took an interested in homeschooling during the pandemic, with the tools I wish I'd had when I first started homeschooling. Things like "What is the Charlotte Mason method? or "What are the laws about homeschooling?" As the idea of the book grew, more and more people took an interest in homeschooling and I wanted to make an easy and inspiring tool available for those aspiring parents.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  My desire is that the reader will go away feeling empowered, confident, and inspired to take the reins of their children's education. For parents who are already homeschooling, I hope that this book will be a like a breath of fresh air, giving them a second wind of new ideas and renewed encouragement.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  This book encompasses everything I wish I had known when I first started homeschooling as well as the inspiration I've needed to keep going. I had the wonderful opportunity to interview several homeschooling moms and learned so much from their experiences. I found I was not the only parent out there who struggles with self-doubt, and with the extremes of wondering if I'm pushing my kids too hard or if I'm pushing them hard enough. I've read this book over and over again for my own benefit as a reminder that I am enough. God is always there ready to fill in gaps that I've missed and redeem any mistakes that I've made along the way. I've been challenged that it's ok to revamp how school looks in our house to fit my current needs and circumstances and to fit the unique personalities and learning styles of each of my kids. In fact, even with only one semester remaining, I've decided again to change things up and let go of control and of things that really don't matter in light of eternity.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  I've been greatly influenced by the ladies I've interview for this book and each one has inspired me with fresh ideas and insight on parenting and homeschooling. Meagan Todd, who wrote chapter 11 on Unschooling, is a mom who does more research than anyone I know on the subjects of child development and education, and she has been an inspiration to me to let go of control and see what God will do.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  If God has called you to homeschool, you are enough! You don't have to know everything there is to know about homeschooling before you start your journey. You don't have to be perfect, or have it all together, or have some supernatural abundance of patience. The homeschooling road is hard. It will be messy at times, sanctifying at times, but it is also so rewarding. And you're not in it alone! God will be right there holding your hand ready to fill in any gaps you might miss and redeem any mistakes you might make.
