Jim5 Stars Out Of 5March 17, 2010JimOne of the blogs that I regularly visit is Kingdom People, by Trevin Wax. I enjoy the site because Waxs high view of Christ and His gospel permeate each post. Because of that, I have been eagerly anticipating the release of his new book, Holy Subversion: Allegiance to Christ in an Age of Rivals. I was not disappointed. In the book, Wax identifies seven Caesarsmodern day idols before which people in our society regularly bow. As he identifies each idol, he calls Christians to follow the example of the early church in subverting the authority of Caesar by submitting to the lordship of Jesus. Although the author recognizes there are innumerable rivals to Christs lordship, he discusses seven of the most prominent in our cultureself, success, money, leisure, sex, power and tolerance. The book is an easy read, not just because it is short, but because it is well-organized and succinctly written. Each chapter begins by introducing readers to one of the seven listed societal idols. But instead of devolving into a cultural diatribe, the reader is left with a number of practical applications designed to subvert each of the Caesars and keep Christ in His rightful place as Lord. The author uses subversion in the sense of de-idolizing Gods good gifts and putting them back in their proper place under the lordship of Jesus. Each chapter is both convicting and beneficial. Readers will find themselves challenged and encouraged. More than that, they will find that they are left with a profound sense of worship because of who Jesus is and who He created them to be.

Martin PitcherNauvoo, ILAge: 45-54Gender: male5 Stars Out Of 5March 17, 2010Martin PitcherNauvoo, ILAge: 45-54Gender: maleTrevin Wax is an individual who I enjoy reading. I have read his blog for some time now and was delighted when I was able to read his book Holy Subversion: Allegiance to Christ in an Age of Rivals.Trevin takes on seven age-old idols that mankind has dealt with since the cross. In fact, many have been a problem since Adams fall. The seven are: self, success, money, leisure, sex, power, and evangelism. Yet he deals with each one in a way that is easy to read and understand. This book will penetrate any false notions we have regarding each one and the subtlety of there control within our life.I recommend that anyone who is disciplining people get this book, read it, study it and then teach what you have learned from its pages to those around you. If we apply the the balm that is in its pages, it will change who we are as individuals and as a community of believers. This book was a classic before the ink dried on the first page.
