Dr. David R. Bess4 Stars Out Of 5Classic, But as a Reference, not a "Read-Through" BookDecember 29, 2019Dr. David R. BessThis book was my first one by J.C. Ryle. Holiness is his forte, so I wanted to benefit from his insights. This work is long and is not an easy read. He does provide excellent commentary on Christian holiness and the obstacles believers encounter on obtaining it. Now that I've read it through from cover to cover, I'd recommend it more as a reference book rather than a book to read in its entirety. I gave it four stars rather than five primarily due to its length (he could have said what he said with far fewer words). Because it's rather dated, it's also hard to read. A modern translation of it would be very helpful. Still, I recommend it, but more as a reference than a "read-through" book.

Gerry GMalden, MaAge: 55-65Gender: male5 Stars Out Of 5Without Fighting There Can Be No HolinessOctober 29, 2012Gerry GMalden, MaAge: 55-65Gender: maleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Outside of the Bible, this is the only book over 400 pages I have ever read. Practical Religion by JC Ryle will be my next. Holiness Written in 1877 is timeless because it speaks of the Love and Gace of God and how we must fight to embrace these gifts and in return glorify God with our lives. It also speaks of How sin holds us back, that there is a cost to our love of the world and our selfishness. And that is only two of the chapters. The book also has a short biography.--"True holiness does not consist merely of believing and feeling, but of doing and bearing" JC Ryle
