Classic, But as a Reference, not a "Read-Through" Book
    December 29, 2019
    Dr. David R. Bess
This book was my first one by J.C. Ryle. Holiness is his forte, so I wanted to benefit from his insights. This work is long and is not an easy read. He does provide excellent commentary on Christian holiness and the obstacles believers encounter on obtaining it. Now that I've read it through from cover to cover, I'd recommend it more as a reference book rather than a book to read in its entirety. I gave it four stars rather than five primarily due to its length (he could have said what he said with far fewer words). Because it's rather dated, it's also hard to read. A modern translation of it would be very helpful. Still, I recommend it, but more as a reference than a "read-through" book.

I must say that I found myself VERY surprised by J.C. Ryle's pin-point practical intakes on the different aspects involved that dictate our Christian walk. I would HIGHLY recommend this book as well as other works by J.C. Ryle!!!

Outside of the Bible, this is the only book over 400 pages I have ever read. Practical Religion by JC Ryle will be my next. Holiness Written in 1877 is timeless because it speaks of the Love and Gace of God and how we must fight to embrace these gifts and in return glorify God with our lives. It also speaks of How sin holds us back, that there is a cost to our love of the world and our selfishness. And that is only two of the chapters. The book also has a short biography.--"True holiness does not consist merely of believing and feeling, but of doing and bearing" JC Ryle

Excellent book by Ryle. Right on target His lessons are as dependable today as they were when he wrote them 130 years ago.
