Publisher's Description

Jennings Winningly Combines Humor, History, and Romance

Louisa Bell never wanted to be a dance-hall singer, but dire circumstances force her hand. With a little help from her brother in the cavalry, she's able to make ends meet, but lately he's run afoul of his commanding officer, so she undertakes a visit to straighten him out.

Major Daniel Adams has his hands full at Fort Reno. He can barely control his rowdy troops, much less his two adolescent daughters. If Daniel doesn't find someone respectable to guide his children, his mother-in-law insists she'll take them.

When Louisa arrives with some reading materials, she's mistaken for the governess who never appeared. Major Adams is skeptical. She bears little resemblance to his idea of a governess--they're not supposed to be so blamed pretty--but he's left without recourse. His mother-in-law must be satisfied, which leaves him turning a blind eye to his unconventional governess's methods. Louisa's never faced so important a performance. Can she keep her act together long enough?

I love Regina Jennings and have read several of her books. I can count on her for a laugh or two. She has written some of my favorite lines of all times. In Holding The Fort after the Major has fallen off his horse riding barefoot, Louisa has his head in her lap. He awakens and thinks he is dreaming or imagining her. He jumps up, gets back on his horse and rides away. "She couldn't shake the image of him riding away, hunched over, barely able to stay in the saddle. What if he'd fallen off somewhere and was even now being carried down a hole by a colony of well-coordinated prairie dogs?" The idea of Lovely Louisa Bell, a former dance hall singer being mistaken for a Mennonite governess is full of crazy adventure. Add to that the Majors uncooperative daughters and things go down hill from there. Major Daniel Adams knows she does not look anything like the type of person he has ordered, but his hands are tied and he has no chose but to give her a chance. I loved this book and would highly recommend it.

This is Christian Romance done right.

Louisa Bell, aka Lola Bell, is a dance hall singer who has just been replaced by a younger woman. With nowhere to go, she heads to Fort Reno where her brother is stationed. She's just learned that he's gotten himself in trouble, so she hopes that she can help him. In the meantime, Major Daniel Adams is struggling with raising his daughters who are getting to an age that they need a woman's help. So, he decides to send off for a governess from the nearby Mennonites. While enroute to the fort, Louisa meets Major Adams' intended governess who is turning back due to allergies and agrees to deliver the educational materials to the Major. Upon arrival with the books, she is mistaken for the governess. Without any other options, Louisa decides to continue with the ruse, but as she gets to know the girls and their father, her deception weighs on her conscience. Can she reveal her true identity and risk getting sent away?

What follows is a lot of humor, tender romance, and a slice of history. Within the developing romance between Louisa and the Major are some truly funny scenes. And, even though this is a fictional story, the author details at the end how real history and real people were introduced within the story.

A primary theme within the story is the redemption available through Jesus. At the beginning of the story, Louisa doesn't trust God or church goers. But, as she observes other Christians and listens to them, she softens and accepts the Gospel message. Another smaller theme is forgiveness. Will she be forgiven if she reveals her past and the deception she's living as a governess?

    Romance - G / tame PG

    Language - clean

Violence - one fight scene, man thrown from horse and hits head, causing bleeding.

    My rating - 5 stars

This was a fun, easy read. The type of book I call a beach read. It was thoroughly enjoyable with wonderful vibrant characters, a great setting, and some history woven in the pages.

Its a story of love and forgiveness, but a lighthearted read at the same time. The humor is well done, and the cast of characters pull it off so well. I also love that a faith theme makes its way into the story. With a singer as a governess, two rambunctious girls, one lonely major, and an ornery private, the reader gets a terrifically fun ride!

This is a story that will make you smile, laugh, and remember anew why you love to read.

I received this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

Holding The Fort Is Major Daniel is about re-establishment for a new life. For Louisa who use to sing at a bar now she wants to move to the Indian Fort and see if they could use a singer, but Major Daniel needed a tutor /nanny for his two daughters who are out of control re-establishment Major Daniel is a single dad and has been treating his daughters like they were in the military and the grandparents of two girls tare trying to get the girls to move in with them so that makes him feel like junk knowing they're out of control, most likely because they don't have a woman in their lives, guess what happens? It is amazing and wonderful . Will anything happen with Louisa and the Major ? Will Luisa 's straighten out these two terrors? What about their grandparents ? With all this is there bound to be some hijinx? I received a copy of this book from the Publisher and Netgalley; all the opinions expressed in this review are all my own.
