Designed to help students master the nine units taught in IEW's Structure and Style course, US History-Based Writing Lessons Volume 1: Explorer's to the Gold Rush gives students an opportunity to work on their composition, grammar, and vocabulary skills while learning about American history. Units move chronologically through time and cover Christopher Columbus, the Mayflower, the Salem Witch trials, Boston Tea Party, Colonial Life, the Constitution, Thomas Jefferson, Johnny Appleseed, Freedom of Religion, Lewis and Clark, the Gold Rush, and more.
This student book contains assignments, instructions, source texts, outlines, checklists, sample compositions, and vocabulary cards, as well as instructions on accessing a 41-page ebook supplement with printable checklists.
The included teacher's manual provides teacher instructions, sample keyword outlines, brainstorming ideas, answers to questions, review games and additional resources. Student pages are reproduced with either the correct answers overlaid, or surrounded by instructions for the lesson.
The Student Resource Notebook is required to complete this course; it can be downloaded and printed (110 pages) as a free ebook, or is available for purchase separately. Teachers must be already familiar with the Institute for Excellence in Writing's Structure and Style in order to teach this course.
Grades 3-12. Most appropriate for upper-elementary and middle school students grades 5-8, high school students new to the IEW method, or as a one-semester course for high school students familiar with the program.
