M Stewart5 Stars Out Of 5Great intro to many important historical figuresAugust 23, 2013M StewartQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 4We have used 2 of these volumes in our homeschool history studies, and I am pleased with them. This year, I bought the complete set to keep in our church library.
Each chapter is about 15 pages long and is written as a story that highlights a few key events in the person's life. As such, conversation has been added, but it serves to advance the plot. A paragraph at the end of each chapter summarizes that individual's importance in the history of the church. These are not meant to be full biographies of each person. My child enjoys learning history through stories, and this is a good way to give a student an overview of these men and women. For certain people, we have started with this book and then found a longer biography to read.
Each book includes several 3 to 4 page articles which explain some aspect of the time period. Again, these are meant to be short overviews; they cannot replace a more detailed text.
Overall, these books have been a good match for us. Children ages 9 to 13 can enjoy them independently; parents could read selections from each book to younger pupils.
Homeschool Mama5 Stars Out Of 5LOVE these books!October 3, 2012Homeschool MamaQuality: 4Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I am reading through Peril and Peace out loud with my 4th and 2nd graders as we study this period of history. They are enthralled with the stories, I love that they are learning church history (and I'm learning with them!).
Some of the stories of the martyrs are a bit graphic for a second grader, but I'm able to edit them as I read out loud. If you have misgivings about your children knowing a little too much about the suffering of the martyrs, I suggest doing some pre-reading yourself before handing the books over.
That said, I feel they are entirely appropriate for the age group for which they're advertised (9-14 year-olds).
I can't recommend these books highly enough to bring to life crucial events and characters from church history that often go untaught.
