Teach middle-school students (Grades 6-8) to write using the IEW Structure & Style method through assignments that also teach U.S. history - - from Columbus to the Space Race
This course is designed to be used by teachers who have been through the Institute for Excellence in Writing's Teaching Writing: Structure and Style seminar.
The course moves through the units taught in TWSS, helping students to learn to write from notes, retell narrative stories, summarize a reference, write from pictures, summarize multiple references, write inventively, write using formal essay models, and write a formal critique.
The Student Book contains assignments, instructions, engaging source texts, blank outlines, checklists, sample compositions, and cardstock vocabulary cards. Lessons are written directly to the student, and include easy-to-follow assignments plus in-book exercises. An optional literature component is provided; students are instructed on chapters to read in books (not-included). A weekly literature response sheet and a final is provided in the appendix. Books used for this component include The Witch of Blackbird Pond, Johnny Tremain, The Sign of the Beaver, By the Great Horn Spoon!, Rifles for Watie, Hattie Big Sky, and Journey to Topaz.
This edition replaces the previous US History Volume 1; the scope and sequence suggested schedule covers 30 weeks.
Access to a free download of the Student Resource Packet, which is a necessary component of this course, is provided, as well as the optional US History-Based Writing Lessons Reproducible Checklists eBook, Blackline Masters eBook, and Sample Key Word Outlines eBook.
