Author/Artist Review

Tell us a little about yourself.  Craig is the Executive Director of Justice Fellowship, the advocacy arm of Prison Fellowship founded by Chuck Colson. Craig is a former speaker of the House in Michigan. He is married to Stacey and has three young daughters.

What was your motivation behind this project?  After living a dual life for my whole adult life of material and political success - while at the same time struggling with addiction, everything crashed in on me in 2010. I surrendered and God lifted me out of addiction and showed me how my experience in both government - and addiction could be used for the benefit of others. I wrote this book to bear witness to the incredible gift I received so that they may learn of the Solution.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  My hope and prayer is that people will read and share this book. A great many of us are called "Highly Functional" because other than our hurts, habits, addictions and afflictions we demonstrate worldly success. The truth is we weren't that functional at all. This book is written a way to bring the reader into the struggle of addiction and recovery by telling it in the first person from the view of the author.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  I wrote this book for the benefit of my daughters first. They are getting old enough to read about the good things there Dad has done in the public eye- and the failures. I wanted them to know the full truth about my life and what God has done for me. As I have shared this story in my work a lot of people have asked me to write it so they could share it with others who are "Highly Functional" too and are too proud to ask for help. I wanted to write the book so that it could be shared as a living testimony to God's plans in our lives and the supernatural way He overcomes our greatest problems.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  The most important influence in my life motivating me to while I wrote this book is the memory of the late Chuck Colson. I only knew Chuck for a short time before he passed, but God used him to build so many - what he called - "living monuments" to God's power, will, love and grace. It was a privilege to know him and follow his suggestion to come to work for Prison Fellowship. It is a privilege to make "visiting the prisoner" such a big part of my day as America awakens to the Restorative Justice Chuck spent his life advancing. I am also very grateful and a huge fan of Mark Batterson who wrote the cover quote for this book. Seeing what God is doing with his ministry is amazing and it is drawing a whole generation to Christ.
