In 1917, Evelyn Marche is just one of many women who has been widowed by the war. A British nurse trapped in German-occupied Brussels, she spends her days working at a hospital and her nights as a waitress in her aunt and uncle's café. Eve also has a carefully guarded secret keeping her in constant danger: She's a spy working for a Belgian resistance group in league with the British Secret Service.
When a British plane crashes in Brussels Park, Eve is the first to reach the downed plane and is shocked to discover she recognizes the badly injured pilot. British RFC Captain Simon Forrester is now a prisoner of war, and Eve knows he could be shot as a spy at any time. She risks her own life to hide him from the Germans, but as the danger mounts and the secrets between them grow, their chance of survival looks grim. And even if they do make it out alive, the truth of what lies between them may be more than any love can overcome.

CozyWriter'sDen5 Stars Out Of 5I LOVED THIS BOOKOctober 25, 2017CozyWriter'sDenQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I loved this book so much! I started reading "High as the Heavens" intending to just read a couple of chapters before bed...and I ended up finishing it in one sitting. I could not put it down. It was like it was glued to my fingers or something. I haven't read a book by Kate Breslin before, but I am certainly going to go and order the rest of her books ASAP. What a talented author...
For me, historical romances make it or break it in the details. This book was clearly well researched and felt so genuine and true to its era. I was immersed into World War I occupied Brussels and honestly felt like I was there.
Evelyn or Eve Marche is a nurse in a German hospital during the day and a spy for the Belgian resistance by night. With her mother, aunt and uncle aiding her they have designed an elaborate scheme for getting information from the front back to British Intelligence. No mission is ever easy or safe and Eve doesn't expect to make it through the war alive. And why should she? Her two younger siblings and her husband have already been lost. With only her mother left, Eve takes the risks she needs to in order to help conquer the Germans.
Dancing a delicate and dangerous line between flirting with the enemy and feeding information to the Allies, Eve's living on borrowed time. When she is called on another midnight mission, Eve has no reason to believe that this one will be anything extraordinary - until she recognizes the package. In that moment, Eve's life is dramatically changed and is now much more dangerous than it was hours before. Eve is flung into a rapid series of events where one misstep will mean the demise of all those she holds dear to her heart.
I loved this book and give it full marks. A definite must read.
rkokesAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Wonderful ReadSeptember 20, 2017rkokesAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0Overview: High as the Heavens was written by Kate Breslin. It takes place during World War I in German-occupied Brussels and follows the story of Evelyn Marche.
Evelyn has suffered much at the hands of the Germans-the death of her husband, the loss of her brother and sister, and the indignities of treating the Germans she works for, and is forced to house in her familys home, with respect while they go about destroying the land that she loves.
But Evelyn has a secret. She is a spy for the Belgian resistance, and when she discovers that her brother and sister might still be alive in France, she determines she must do whatever it takes to save them.
All her plans change however, when a British plane crashes and she discovers Captain Simon Forrester in the wreckage. Can she save Simon from the Germans? Will she find her brother and sister? And what can she do when she discovers that someone is using her code name to leak resistance intelligence to the enemy?
My Thoughts: I really liked this book. I enjoy reading historical fiction-especially those books that take place during World Wars 1 and 2-and this one was a delight to read. The author did a wonderful job describing what it would be like to live as a civilian during the war-everything to the lack of decent food, to the fact that people were forced to house German soldiers in their homes. I really felt like I was in the story, and could see how this was affecting the people of that time period.
The story is well-written, with tons of action, plot twists, and a nice love story to boot. I dont believe I have read anything by Kate previously, but this book definitely made me want to read more.
This was a wonderful book, and one I will be keeping on my shelves. If you enjoy war-time books, or books that are filled with action and suspense and a romantic twist-this one is for you. Enjoy!
And, as always, I am grateful to Bethany House for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for my unbiased review. Thank you!
rkfall5 Stars Out Of 5World War IISeptember 7, 2017rkfallQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I don't normally read "war" books, but what an amazing World War II Christian Fiction and it has made me want to pursue reading others in the future! This one kept me reading page after page after page. With all the situations that the characters were facing with war coming, it being all around them and everything, it was really intense and exciting to follow. To see a glimpse in a fictional way of what those days looked like for the people living through... WOW. The author, Kate, does an amazing job at painting this historical fiction in such a way that it will bring you anticipation, fear and relief with other feelings along the way.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Eve is the kind of heroine readers love wholeheartedly! I admire her courage, intelligence, and loyalty. While she wrestles with her faith and grief, Eve's work with the Belgian resistance makes it necessary for her to keep secrets from her loved ones and take risks with their safety as well as her own.
The challenges and pressures of the folks have who have experienced war at this level are hard to comprehend yet the author gives readers a glimpse of their story. High as the Heavens reveals not only the bravery of the characters but also their heart, resilient spirit, and faith! May we never forget.
I requested the opportunity to read this book through the publisher. The opinions expressed are my own.
Angela SuzanneAge: 18-24Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Excellent war storyAugust 28, 2017Angela SuzanneAge: 18-24Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This book had a slightly darker tone than Im used to in the historical books I read because of the setting and storyline. It was a different take on World War I than what I've read before with the heroine of the story already being married yet not being with her husband. I liked the few flashbacks of Simon & Evelyn's love story. It made me root for them that much more. I also liked that the ending wasn't completely happy because it made it more realistic and still maintained the overall tone of the book. The ending still brought a close to Simon & Evelyn's story just with not everything resolved as the war hadn't ended. It is an excellent book for those who enjoy war stories and prefer some darker or more melancholy themes.
