The Harrison lodge is full of hiding places where young Kate can discover all the secrets no one wants her to know.
Eleven-year-old Kate keeps her knowledge to herselfone sisters stash of marijuana, the others petty cash pilfering, her grandfathers contraband candy bars. She protects her mother and Gran, too, screening out critical comments from the hotel suggestions box. But suddenly the stakes are raised; her grandfathers best friend is murdered the day after Kate heard the two men arguing.
At the same time, far from the quiet mountain resort, a homeless man sees a robbery gone wrong . . . a gang member seeks revenge for the death of his son . . . and a boy chooses the worst time to wield spray paint on a store window. In a strange and spiraling sequence of events, their disparate worlds collide at Harrison Lodge.
Kate offers shelter to one of them, unaware of the terrible consequences to the family she loves. But people can hide in all kinds of ways, sometimes even in plain sight . . . and some secrets are just waiting to be exposed.
Deana4 Stars Out Of 5Best Kept SecretsJanuary 25, 2016DeanaQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5The story is centered around Kate who seems to very good at finding places to hide. She tries to stay out of the way, almost like she isn't really there. She lives at Harrison Lodge and her family has cottages on the land where they live. It is a family business and they all pitch in to help keep the lodge running. After the renovation, Kate has found more places to conceal herself. She must get to hear a lot of conversations in her hiding places. Does she hear something one day that could cause her harm? Kate is a lonely child that no one seems to care about except for her grandfather. He loves being with her and Kate is always excited about her time spent with him. Her mother is to busy grieving for Kate's dad who left them. I felt so sorry for Kate at times, that I wish I could hug her.
This story has many different characters thst seem to collide at Harrison Lodge. Charlie has gotten himself mixed up with a gang and soon realizes he needs to find a way to escape from them. When he agrees to do one more job for them, things get out of hand and a 12 year old boy is killed. Charlie finds himself on the run and ends up at the lodge. I loved how the author weaved several families and their stories and found their way to the lodge. What a great place to hide from a distraught family situation, or a man who needs to hide before he is hurt. Can people be forgiven for mistakes? Will others reach out and show love? Does anyone get a second chance?
It is a well written story about redemption , family and seeking forgiveness. The author writes with details that keep you guessing and slips in little plot twists that make you keep reading. This is another well written book by an author who brings a story together with such clarity . If you have not read one of the author's books you are missing out on stories that grip your emotions and hold your attention with such outstanding character development.

vickimarie20025 Stars Out Of 5A great story about the lengths people go for their family.December 6, 2015vickimarie2002Quality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0A great story told by 4 very different and yet, not so very different people who are all brought together by a series of events. There is Kate: an 11 year old girl who lives with her family at a lodge in Colorado that they run, Pearl: who is Kate's great grandmother who's Father started the lodge, Fox: the leader of the gang, The Mile High Heavies and Charlie: a homeless man who lives at a bridge with his street family. At times it is very intense and always keeps you guessing. It shows you what different people will do to protect their family.

Kate had a quiet life trying to just stay out of everyones way. She certainly knew where most of the hiding places her Great-Grandfather had built into the Hotel were. Secrets, family problems, murder and a gang member looking for the young man he thought murdered his son. All played out at the Harrison Lodge!

Jeanine5 Stars Out Of 5Hiding PlacesNovember 25, 2015JeanineQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This is a story about a young girl, Kate, who lives with 3 generations of family in a hotel in Oregon. Kate is a precocious girl who is very attentive to details around her. She keeps track of the goings on in the hotel and is quite intelligent when it comes to being invisible to those around her. She notices that her Grampa is having a disagreement with his friend and becomes very concerned when she goes with her Grampa to visit the friends shop and the visit turns into an argument. Would her Grampa really hurt his friend, or even kill him? Kate is pondering this when she notices her best friends brother steal a phone from the shop. She follows him and confronts him, and the story takes a turn. The boy threatens her not to tell and she doesnt, although this bothers her.
At this point the story takes a new tack and introduces another subplot with a young man who is involved with a homeless group. He becomes involved in a crime that links him to Kate when he is injured and she finds him. She hides him, not knowing that ultimately it will bring thugs seeking retribution right to her familys doorstep. This story has twists and turns that kept me wondering which direction they would go. I enjoyed this book and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a clean, entertaining story.
Britt98Grand Prairie, TXAge: 35-44Gender: female3 Stars Out Of 5Slow Start for Me, but Lots of Interesting CharactersNovember 11, 2015Britt98Grand Prairie, TXAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4Hiding Places was an interesting book. Although I thought that the way the story was put together was creative, it moved very slowly for me. There are many characters, coming from a wide variety of situations, and the reader follows these various men, women, and even a young girl to discover what is going on and how everything converges together.
I enjoyed the history of the hotel that is eventually revealed. I think that was my favorite part of the book for me. I felt sorry for Kate and the way her family treated her. My favorite character was Pearl, who was Kates great-grandmother. She was so interesting.
Overall, not my favorite story out there, but I think it could appeal to readers who like suspense. Also, although it is technically listed as Christian fiction, it only has a very light reference to religion. This story could easily appeal to readers who enjoy suspense from the general market.
