Took a bit to get into
October 7, 2016
I very nearly gave up on this book, it must have taken until about half way through, to finally start moving. I usually have no trouble with books that take a few chapters before the story picks up, but this really seemed to drag. I even popped in here to read the reviews which helped me to stick with it.
Having said all that, once it did get moving I found it hard to walk away from. I enjoyed learning about the Amana colonies, I have read many Amish stories and found it very interesting to see the differences and they really are quite different.
My favourite character would have been Cousin Louise she was a good worker who applied her clever people skills to perfection in managing the kuche. I did find Dovie annoying at times, she seemed to switch from being a dutiful girl to being a self centred one at the drop of a hat. Karlina acted out of character from time to time that seemed to come as a bit of a jar to the flow of the story, but I suppose it all goes towards fleshing out the characters.
All up though I did enjoy the book, I enjoyed the read and was happy with the resolutions of the characters.
This is a wonderful story of a young woman who moves to the Amana Colony to find out about her mother's past. It's a beautiful story of friendship, romance, a hard working community and people who genuinely care for each other. The suspense and mystery of what really happened to cause Dovey's mom to leave the Amana Colony kept me turning the pages. A heart warming book for sure!
