Publisher's Description

Lena Daniels never thought she’d get the chance star in a movie. Headstrong and determined, she has her life planned out to the minute. But when her best friends, Savannah and Emma, tell her about an audition, she knows there’s nothing else in the world she’d rather do. And now that she’s gotten her wish, Lena finds that being in the spotlight is harder than it sounds. She got everything she never wanted! Her face turns up everywhere she goes, and everything in her life is flipped upside down. Lena wonders if this is a dream come true or a horrible nightmare. Even a visit from her best friends during filming turns into a disaster.

With her little sisters—Ansley, Ashton, and Amber—and her mischievous pup, Austin, constantly at her side, Lena must face the challenges of everyday life while chasing her dreams of being a model and actress on the big screen. Lena tackles tough choices, learns the value of perseverance, and keeps her hopes high. She knows her faith and family will keep her feet on the ground and her eyes on the stars.

This Faithgirlz series entitled Lena in the Spotlight, written by Alena Pitts, star of War Room and tween blogger of For Girls Like You, and co-written with her mother, editor and author, Wynter Pitts, is a reflection of Alena’s own life experiences as she reaches for the stars and keeps her faith in balance.

Author Bio

Alena Pitts is a young actress and model from Dallas, Texas.  As the oldest of four girls, Alena first cut her teeth in acting through making home videos and dramas with her sisters, using their entire home as their recording studio.  She has a natural love for all things creative which falls right in line with her gifts and talents. The Kendrick Brothers’ War Room marks Alena’s professional acting debut. With only school theater on her young resume, Alena jumped at a chance to audition for the role of Danielle Jordan. In addition to school and acting, Alena models and is a frequent contributor for the magazine For Girls Like You.

Wynter Pitts is the founder of For Girls Like You Magazine and the author of For Girls Like You: A Devotional for Tweens and You’re God’s Girl. The mother of four girls, Wynter’s mission is to empower and equip girls to walk boldly into becoming who God has created them to be and to provide parents with the resources and support needed to raise strong Christ followers. In addition to publishing the quarterly magazine, Wynter is a frequent blogger, a contributor for LifeWay’s ParentLife Magazine, and a public speaker. She is also the niece of Dr. Tony Evans. Wynter, her husband Jonathan, and four daughters (ages 6-11), reside in Dallas, Texas.

This book is written for the pre-teen girl. By none other than the young lady from War Room who played Priscilla Shirer's daughter in the movie. The story is like a fictional version of Alena's real life, knowing what she wanted to do but the reality of what she's doing has to set in.

The first thing that drew me to the book as a mom was the cover. This girl looks like my girls, pretty brown skin with a big smile. And I think it's extremely important that they see girls who look like them on the covers of books. I also like that it is apart of the Faithgirlz line of books which tells me that it will be age appropriate with our faith all through it.

My daughter (not the best at describing) says she loved it. Especially because she got to see snippets of how Lena interacts with different situations in life and with her younger siblings.

FYI: I received this book from the publisher in exchange for my HONEST opinion.

My girls ages 9, 7, 4 absolutely LOVE this story! They beg for me to read it to them at bedtime. I also told them who wrote the book which excited them more because they loved her role in War Room! A real faith story for young girls!

My 8-year-old and I read this story together. We loved it. Although the lead character, Lena, is dealing with issues that occur in her special time to star in a movie, so many of her feelings and issues can relate to every day life. I love how the adults in her life are always turning to prayer and the Bible for help for Lena and their own issues and decisions. This story helps show children the power of God and the importance of prayer. It is an amazing story and I love that it is a multicultural book! Disclosure: I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Just when we think we have it all figured out, God shows up and shows us that He has bigger plans for our life. Such is the case with Lena, a young girl who had big dreams of starring in a movie.

Lena Daniels never thought shed get the chance star in a movie. Headstrong and determined, she has her life planned out to the minute. But when her best friends, Savannah and Emma, tell her about an audition, she knows theres nothing else in the world shed rather do. And now that shes gotten her wish, Lena finds that being in the spotlight is harder than it sounds. She got everything she never wanted! Her face turns up everywhere she goes, and everything in her life is flipped upside down. Lena wonders if this is a dream come true or a horrible nightmare. Even a visit from her best friends during filming turns into a disaster.

My daughter loved the book and the character and the message in the story. Sometimes we have good intentions and we start on our own journey thinking that we are headed in the right direction. Every now and again we are reminded that our ways are not His ways and our thoughts are not His thoughts. God has a way of closing one door only to open another. When we experience these moments, in the midst of these circumstances we learn to trust in God and increase our faith in Him. Ultimately, it is God's plans for our lives that will succeed, hopefully we learn to love, trust and grow our faith during the process.

I think this book is great for younger readers and would be a great addition to a youth book club. The book was very descriptive and vivid in detail. The characters were well developed and each had their own distinct personality. There are life lessons and opportunities to discuss the topic of faith and increase the conversation about God.

If you've had the opportunity to watch the movie War Room then you are already aquainted with the talented author Alena Pitts. Alena played the part of Danielle Jordan, the darling daughter in the movie. She has taken that amazing experience and turned it into a delightful read for tween girls.

There is so much that I liked about this book, but the one thing that stands out is the over-riding theme of God being a central part of every decision in this family. Lena's character has an authentic feel to it, most likely because it is written by a young girl that experienced very similar situations.

I also liked how the story related to the every day girl that would be reading it. Not every girl is going to have an opportunity to be in a movie but they will have an opportunity to live out their faith in whatever area God has for them. Lena presents an opportunity to look at what it's like to have faith in God even in unknown circumstances. It's a great story of learning the wisdom from Proverbs 16:9 that we make our plans but God directs our steps.

This would be a wonderful read for tween girls. I can't think of a single drawback that would keep me from recommending it to you. The characters are well rounded and the dialogue is snappy. The situations are real and vulnerable and uplifting. If you've got a tween girl in your life get this book and this series for her!

I received a copy of this book to facilitate my review.
